১৯১৬ সালে জাপান গেলেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ। তখন তার বয়স ৫৫। কলেজ ছাত্রী তোমির বয়স তখন মাত্র ২০। তোমির কলেজেই অতিথি হয়ে গিয়েছিলেন কবি।
প্রথম দেখাতেই যেন প্রেম। দেশ কাল পাত্র সব ভুলে আজীবনের এক অদৃশ্য বন্ধনে যেন বাধা পড়লেন তোমি। সেবারই কলেজ ছাত্রছাত্রীদের সাথে একটা ট্যুর হয় কবির। সেই সফরের আরো ঘনিষ্ট ও আন্তরিক হন তোমি ও রবীন্দ্রনাথ।
তোমি ইংরেজি জানতেন। কবির ভাষণের অনুবাদের কাজটা করতেন তিনি।সাথে কবিকে দেখাশোনা, ঘর গোছানো সহ সকল কাজের দায়িত্ব ছিল তার উপর। কবির প্রেমে এতটাই মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলেন তিনি যে বালিশে লেগে থাকা কবির চুল সংগ্রহ করে রাখতেন গোপনে। জাপানের তোমি রবীর প্রথম প্রেম পর্ব এভাবেই যেন নিমেষেই কেটে যায় দুজনের।
জাপান থেকে ফেরার তিন বছর পরে ১৯১৯ সাল কবি এবার আমেরিকায় যায়। কবির বয়স তখন ৫৮ আর তোমি ২৩। তোমি তখন কলম্বিয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রী। কবি আমেরিকায় এসেছেন শুনে তার সাথে দেখা করতে এবার নিউইয়র্ক গেলেন তোমি।
জাপান থাকতে বালিশে লেগে থাকা মাথার যে চুল সযন্তে রেখে দিতেন তোমি, সেই চুল এবার সাথে করে নিয়ে গেছেন আমেরিকায়। নিউইয়র্ক দুজনের বন্ধুত্ব যেন আরো গাঢ় হয়। আবারো জাপানে যাবার আমন্ত্রণ জানায় তোমি। তোমির হাত ধরে প্রতিশ্রুতিও দিয়েছিলেন কবিগুরু।
পাঁচ বছর পর ১৯২৪ সালে আবার জাপান গিয়েছিলেন কবি, তখন তার বয়স ৬৩ বছর। উঠেছিলেন নাগাসাকিতে তোমির বাড়িতে। সে সময়ের প্রেম উঠেছিল এক চরম সীমায়।
১৯৩৪ সালে বিয়ে করেন তোমি। বিয়ের পরও রবীন্দ্রনাথকে ছেড়ে থাকতে পারেননি তিনি।১৯৩৬ সালে শান্তিনিকেতনে এসেছিলেন কবিকে দেখতে। তখন ভগ্ন শরীরে চিত্রাঙ্গদার মহড়া দিচ্ছিলেন ৭৫ বছরের রবী। দেখে মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলেন তোমি।কথা শেষে আবারো জাপানে আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়েছিলেন কবিকে।
কিন্তু সেই আমন্ত্রন আর রক্ষা করা হয়নি কবির। তার আগেই ১৯৪৫ সালে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধে অ্যাটম বোমা ফেলা হয় নাগাসাকিতে।কি নির্মম বিধ্বংসী সেই যুদ্ধ। তবু ভালো কবিকে দেখতে হয়নি তার প্রিয় বান্ধবীর শহর ধ্বংসের লীলাযজ্ঞ। তার আগেই পৃথিবী ছেড়ে চলে গিয়েছিলেন বিশ্বকবি।
১৯৯৩ সালে ৯৬ বছর বয়সে মারা যান রবীন্দ্রমুগ্ধ এই নারী।
