পারভেজ সেলিম।
বাংলার ইতিহাসকে চারটি ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়। প্রাচীন যুগ (১৭০০-৩০ খ্রি.পূর্ব), ধ্রুপদী যুগ (৩২০-১২৩০ খ্রি.), মধ্যযুগ (১২০৪-১৭৫৭ খ্রি.) ও আধুনিক যুগ (১৭৫৭-বর্তমান)।
প্রাচীনকালের যে ইতিহাস আমরা জানি তা থেকে মৌর্য যুগ পর্যন্ত সময়কে ধরা হয় প্রাচীন যুগ। যদিও এর পরের দুইশ বছরও প্রাচীন যুগের মধ্যেই পড়ে।
এরপর শুরু হয় সাড়ে তিনশ বছরের ইতিহাস আমাদের আজানা ইতিহাসে যা অন্ধকার যুগ নামে পরিচিত। ক্লাসিক বা ধ্রুপদী বাংলার যুগ শুরু হয় ৩২০ সালে গুপ্ত সাম্রাজ্য শাসনের মধে দিয়ে। গুপ্ত যুগকে বাংলার সমৃদ্ধির শ্রেষ্ঠ যুগ হিসেবে ধরা হয়।
গুপ্ত যুগ শুরু হয় ৩২০ খ্রি.। আর এর মধ্য দিয়েই আসলে শুরু হয় ক্লাসিক বা ধ্রুপদী বাংলার শাসনকাল।গুপ্ত সাম্রাজ্যের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ছিলেন শ্রী গুপ্ত। এই বংশের প্রথমদিকের রাজারা হিন্দু হলেও শেষ দিকের রাজারা বৌদ্ধ ধর্মে দীক্ষিত হতে থাকেন।
শ্রী গুপ্ত গুপ্ত বংশের প্রতিষ্ঠা করলেও তার নাতি প্রথম চন্দ্রগুপ্তের হাতে এই বংশের শান শওকাত বৃদ্ধি পেতে থাকে। ২৮০ সালে শ্রী গুপ্ত মারা গেলে তার ছেলে ঘটোৎকচ ক্ষমতায় বসেন। তিনি ৩১৯ সাল পর্যন্ত ক্ষমতায় ছিলেন, এরপর প্রথম চন্দ্রগুপ্ত ক্ষমতায় আসেন ৩২০ সালে। এই সময়কে মুলত গুপ্ত যুগের সূচনা হিসেবে ধরা হয়।
প্রথম চন্দ্রগুপ্তের সময় থেকে গুপ্ত সাম্রাজের বিস্তৃতি ঘটতে থাকে চারিদিকে। ৩৩৫ সাল পর্যন্ত ক্ষমতায় ছিলেন প্রথম চন্দ্রগুপ্ত। তারপর ছেলে সমুদ্রগুপ্তের হাতে ক্ষমতা চলে যায়।
সমুদ্রগুপ্ত ছিলেন গুপ্ত বংশের শ্রেষ্ঠ রাজা। শুধু এই বংশের নয় ভারত বর্ষের ইতিহাসের শ্রেষ্ঠ রাজাদের একজন ছিলেন সমুদ্রগুপ্ত।
তিনি চন্দ্রগুপ্তের প্রথম সন্তান ছিলেন না। শৌর্য ও বীর্যে তিনি অন্য সন্তানদের থেকে শ্রেষ্ঠ ছিলেন বলেই পিতা তাকে উত্তরাধীকার করে যান। পিতার সেই সম্মান রেখেছিলেন সমুদ্রগুপ্ত। পাটালীপুত্রই ছিল গুপ্ত সম্রাজ্যের রাজধানী।
ব্রাক্ষ্মণ্য ধর্মের পৃষ্ঠপোষক হলেও সমুদ্র ছিলেন চরম সহিষ্ণু এক রাজা। সে সময়ের শ্রেষ্ঠ বৌদ্ধ পন্ডিত বসুবন্ধু ছিলেন তার মন্ত্রী এবং শুভাকাঙ্খী।
সমুদ্রগুপ্তের সিংহাসনে বসার তারিখ নিয়ে দ্বিমত রয়েছে। কেউ বলে ৩২৫ খ্রি. কেউ বলে ৩৪০ থেকে ৩৫০ খ্রি. এর মধ্যে কোন এক সময়। আবার কারো কারো মতে এই সালটি ৩৩৫ খ্রি.। ইতিহাসে পাওয়া যায় সমুত্রগুপ্ত বিশ জন রাজাকে পরাজিত করে বিশাল সাম্রাজ্য বানিয়েছিলেন। ৩৮০ সালে মৃত্যু বরণ করেন ধ্রুপদী বাংলার শ্রেষ্ঠ এই সম্রাট।
এছাড়া সমুদ্র গুপ্তের ছেলে দ্বিতীয় চন্দ্রগুপ্ত, পরে রামগুপ্ত সহ অনেকেই পরাক্রমশালী রাজা হিসেবে আত্নপ্রকাশ করেছিলেন।
ইতিহাসে কয়েকজন চন্দ্রগুপ্ত আছেন। চন্দ্রগুপ্ত মৌর্য ছিলেন প্রাচীন মৌর্য সম্রাজ্যের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা। আর গুপ্ত বংশের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা হলেন শ্রী গুপ্ত, তার নাতির নাম ছিল ‘প্রথম চন্দ্রগুপ্ত’। গুপ্ত বংশের শ্রেষ্ঠ রাজা সমুদ্রগুপ্তের পিতাও পুত্র দুজনের নামই ছিল চন্দ্রগুপ্ত। পিতা ছিলেন ‘প্রথম চন্দ্রগুপ্ত’ আর পুত্র ছিলেন ‘দ্বিতীয় চন্দ্রগুপ্ত’। ইতিহাসে যিনি ‘বিক্রমাদিত্য চন্দ্রগুপ্ত’ নামে পরিচিত।
চীন পরিব্রাজক ফা হিয়েন এসময় ভারতে এসেছিলেন।গুপ্ত শাসকদের শক্তির মুল উৎস ছিল ঘোড়া। যা তারা কুশানদের কাছ থেকে শিখেছিল।
দ্বিতীয় চন্দ্রগুপ্তের সভায় ৯ জন বিখ্যাত পন্ডিত ব্যক্তি ছিলেন। সংস্কৃত ভাষার শ্রেষ্ঠ কবি, নাট্যকার কালিদাস, শ্রেষ্ঠ গনিতবিদ আর্যভট্ট ছিলেন তাদের মধ্য অন্যতম। এছাড়া বরাহমিহির, বেতালভট্ট শিক্ষা সংস্কৃতিতে এক অন্যতম উচ্চতায় নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন গুপ্ত যুগকে।
দ্বিতীয় চন্দ্রগুপ্তের ছেলে কুমারগুপ্ত নালন্দ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্থাপন করেছিলেন।এক শক্তিশালি একতাবদ্ধ সাম্রাজ্য প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে পেরেছিল গুপ্ত বংশের রাজারা। ৩২০সালে শুরু হওয়া এই যুগ শেষ হয় ৫৫০ সালে। ২৩০ বছর টিকে ছিল এই গুপ্তযুগ।
শেষের দিকে উত্তরাধিকারদের মধ্য অন্তকোন্দল, সামরিক শক্তিকে অবেহেলা করে বুদ্ধের অহিংসা নীতি গ্রহণসহ নানা কারনে গুপ্ত সম্রাজের পতন শুরু হয়।
এরপর গুপ্ত বংশের ক্ষমতার শেষের দিকে কেন্দ্রীয় ক্ষমতা শুন্য হয়ে পড়ে । এসময বাংলাও স্বাধীন হয়ে যায়। প্রথমবারের মতো এক বাঙ্গালী রাজা বাংলার ক্ষমতায় বসেন যার নাম শশাংক।
