বাংলার মুসলমানের মনে আজ আটশত বছর ধরে একজন শাসকের নাম বারবার উচ্চারিত হয়ে আসছে, ইসলাম বিশ্বাসীদের কাছে যিনি কিংবদন্তি হয়ে আছেন তিনি হলেন বখতিয়ার খলজি ।
তার পুরো নাম ইখতিয়ার উদ্দিন মোহাম্মদ বিন বখতিয়ার খলজি। খলজিই ছিলেন বাংলার প্রথম মুসলিম শাসক। তিনি বাংলা দখল করেন ১২০৪ সালে। সেইসময় বাংলা শাসন করতেন হিন্দু রাজারা। রাজা লক্ষণ সেনকে হটিয়ে দিয়ে তিনিই প্রথম এই অঞ্চলে মুসলিম শাসন প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন।
এই সময় দিল্লির শাসনকর্তা ছিলেন কুতুবউদ্দীন আইবেক। তিনি ছিলেন গজনীর সুলতান মোহাম্মদ ঘুরির নিয়োগকৃত শাসনকর্তা।
খুব সহজেই বাংলা দখল শেষে খলজি লখনৌ দখল করেন এবং সেখানে তার রাজধানী স্থাপন করেন। এরপর বাংলা অন্যান্য অঞ্চলগুলো দখলে বের না হয়ে খলজি তিব্বত আক্রমণের উদ্দেশ্যে বের হন। কিন্তু পাহাড় পর্বতে ঘেরা তিব্বত দখল করতে ব্যর্থ হন বখতিয়ারের বাহিনী।
এমন পরাজয় মেনে নিতে না পেরে মাত্র দুই বছরের মাথায় মৃত্যু বরণ করেন খলজি। ১২০৬ সালে শেষ হয় বাংলার প্রথম মুসলিম শাসক ইখতিয়ার উদ্দীন মোহাম্মদ বিন বখতিয়ার খলজির শাসন।
কে ছিলেন এই খলজি ?
বখতিয়ার খলজি জাতিতে ছিলেন তুর্কী। তবে তার জন্ম হয়েছিল আফগানিস্তানে। ছোট একটি সৈন্যের চাকরির জন্য তিনি কয়েকবার চেষ্ঠা করেও ব্যর্থ হন ।
বখতিয়ার খলজি দেখতে সুন্দর ছিলেন না বলে জানা যায়। তার দুটি হাত ছিল শরীরের তুলনায় লম্বা।
গজনীতে সুলতান ঘোরির সৈন্যবাহিনীতে চাকরির চেষ্টায় প্রথম ব্যর্থ হন তিনি। দারিদ্রতার কারনেই তার চাকরিতে প্রবেশ কার জরুরী হয়ে পড়েছিল।গজনিতে চাকরি না পেয়ে দিল্লিতে কুতবউদ্দীন আইবেকের সৈন্য বাহিনীতে ঢোকার চেষ্ঠা করেন। সেখানেও ব্যর্থ হন বখতিয়ার ।
এরপর তিনি বদাউন চলে যান। সেখানকার মালিক হিজবর উদ্দীন নগদ বেতনে চাকরি দেন খলজিকে। কিন্তু এত ছোট চাকরিতে সন্তুষ্ট ছিলেন না খলজি। বড় কিছু করার আশায় বদাউন ত্যাগ করে তিনি চলে যান অযোধ্যায়। সেখানকার শাসনকর্তা হুসামউদ্দীন তার জন্য যা করেন সেটা তার জন্য বড় আশীর্বাদ হয়ে আসে।
মির্জাপুর জেলার ভাগবত ও ভিউলী নামের দুটি পরগনার জা্য়গির প্রদান করেন খলজিকে। এখান থেকেই খলজির ভাগ্যে চাকা দ্রুত ঘুরতে থাকে। বখতিয়ারের শক্তি প্রদর্শন শুরু এখান থেকেই।

খলজির সাহস ও শক্তির জয়জয়কার :
ধীরে ধীরে শক্তি সঞ্চয় করে খলজি আশেপাশের হিন্দুরাজ্য সমুহ আক্রমণ ও লুন্ঠণ করতে থাকেন। চারিদিকে খলজির সাহস আর বীরত্বের সুনাম ছড়িয়ে পড়তে থাকে। দলে দলে মুসলমানেরা যোগ দিয়ে থাকেন তার বাহিনীতে। খলজির সৈন্য সংখ্য বাড়তে থাকে খুব দ্রুত। আর খুব সহজেই দখল করতে থাকেন আশেপাশের ছোট ছোট রাজ্যগুলো।
নালন্দা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ধ্বংস :
একের পর এক আশেপাশের এলাকাগুলো যখন খুব সহজে দখল হয়ে যাচ্ছিল, তখনই একদিন প্রাচীর ঘেরা দুর্গের মতো একটি এলাকা আক্রমন করে বসেন খলজি। কোন কিছু না জেনেই তার সৈন্যরা প্রবেশ করে দূর্গের ভিতর।
কোন বাধার সম্মুখীন হয় না খলজির বাহিনী। ভিতরের বাসিন্দাদের দেখে কিছুটা অবাক হন তিনি। সবার মাথা ন্যাড়া করা। আর পুরো দূর্গজুড়ে ছিল বই পুস্তকে ভরা। জিজ্ঞাসের পরে সৈন্যরা জানতে পারলেন তারা একটি বৌদ্ধ বিহার দখল করেছেন।
এটি ছিল ওদন্ত বিহার যা প্রাচীনকালে নালন্দা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় নামে পরিচিতি ছিল। প্রাচীন বাংলা তথা ভারতবর্ষের প্রথম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ছিল এটি। দূর দূরান্ত থেকে অসংখ্য শিক্ষার্থী এখানে পড়তে আসতেন।

খলজির সৈন্যবাহিনীর বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ আছে তারা এখানে লুন্ঠণ করেছিলেন এবং বই পুস্তক পুড়িয়ে ফেলেছি।এই নালন্দা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ধ্বংসকে এখন পর্যন্ত খলজির সবচেয়ে সমালোচিত কাজ হিসেবে ধরা হয় ।
তবে অনেকে মনে করেন শুধু খলজি নয় এর আগেও কয়েকবার আক্রমনের শিকার হযেছিল এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় বিভিন্ন বহি:শক্রর আক্রমণের ।
বৌদ্ধ বিহার জয়ের পর তিনি অনেক ধন সম্পদ নিয়ে দিল্লিতে কুতুবউদ্দিন আইবেকর সাথে দেখা করতে যান। কারন খলজি নিজেকে স্বাধীন নবাব হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠা করেননি । বখতিয়ার খলজি বাংলার প্রথম মুসলিম শাসক হলেও স্বাধীন শাসক ছিলেন না।
দিল্লি থেকে বিহারে ফিরে আসেন তিনি। এরপর আরো সৈন্য সংগ্রহ করে পরের বছর তিনি বাংলা দখল করেন।

খলজির বাংলা দখল :
সেসময় বাংলার রাজা ছিলেন লক্ষন সেন। বাংলার রাজধানী ছিল বিক্রমপুর। খলজি যখন বাংলা আক্রমণ করেন তখন লক্ষণ সেন ছিলেন নদীয়াতে। এর কারণ হিসেবে নানান কথা প্রচলিত আছে। তার একটি হলো হিন্দু শাস্ত্র মতে তুর্কী এক সেনার হাতে বাংলা দখলের ইঙ্গিত ছিল। রাজা লক্ষণ সেন শাস্ত্রের এই অনুমানটি বিশ্বাস করতেন ।
সেজন্যই রাজা রাজধানী ছেড়ে নদীয়ায় গিয়ে আশ্রয় নিয়েছিলেন। নদীয়া তখন ছিল হিন্দুদের তীর্থস্থান। কিন্তু রাজধানী বিক্রমপুর নয় খলজি আক্রমণ করে বসেন নদীয়া।
সেইদিন রাজা লক্ষণ সেন দুপুরের খাবার খাচ্ছিলেন। হঠাৎ শহরে চিৎকার চেঁচামেচিতে জানতে পারেন তুর্কী সেনারা শহর আক্রমণ করেছে এবং তারা প্রাসাদের সামনে এসে দাঁড়িয়েছে। এমন খবর শুনে প্রাসাদের পিছনের দরজা দিয়ে খুব দ্রুত পালিয়ে যান লক্ষণ সেন। পরে নৌপথে তিনি রাজধানী বিক্রমপুর গিয়ে আশ্রয় নেন বলে জানা যায়।
বিনা বাধায় বাংলা দখল :
একটা বড় একটি প্রশ্ন থেকে যায় লক্ষণ সেনের সৈন্যেরা খলজিকে বাধা দিলো না কেন?। কেন বিনা বাধায় দখল হয়ে গেল নদীয়া তথা বাংলা ? লক্ষণের সৈন্যবাহিনীরা কি করছিলেন তখন ?
অভিযানকালে খলজি নদীয়ায় এসে পৌঁছেছিলেন ঝাড়খন্দের গভীর অরণ্য ভেদ করে। তিনি যখন নদীয়ায় পৌঁছান তখন মাত্র ১৮ জন সৈন্য তার সাথে আসতে পেরেছিল । বাকি সৈন্যরা তার সাথে তাল মেলাতে না পারায় অনেক পিছনে পড়ে গিয়েছিল। যেহেতু নদীয়া দখলে কোন যুদ্ধের প্রযোজন পড়েনি তাই একটি কথা প্রচলিত হয়ে পড়ে যে, মাত্র ১৮ জন সৈন্য নিয়ে খলজি বাংলা দখল করেছিল।
কেন বাধা দিল না লক্ষণ সেনের সৈন্যরা :
বাংলায় প্রবেশ করার তখন স্বাভাবিক পথ ছিল রাজমহলের কাছের তেলিয়াগড় গিরিপথ। বাংলার দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম সীমান্ত ছিল ঘণ গভীর জঙ্গল আর উত্তর পশ্চিম ছিল খরা স্রোতা নদী। তাই এই দুটি পথ দিয়ে কারো পক্ষে বাংলা আক্রমণ সম্ভব নয় বলে ধরে নেয়া হতো ।
লক্ষণ সেনের সৈন্যরা সকলেই তেলিয়াগড়ের কাছে প্রতিরোধ গড়ে তুলেছিল বলে ধারণা করা হয়। কিন্তু তাদের সকল পরিকল্পনাকে ব্যর্থ করে দিয়ে খলজি ঝাড়খন্ডের গভীর জঙ্গল দিয়ে নদীয়া আক্রমণ করেন। যা লক্ষণ সেনের সৈন্যদের কল্পনারও বাহিরে ছিল। লক্ষণ সেনের প্রতিরক্ষা ব্যবস্থাকে খুব সহজেই ভেঙ্গে দিয়ে অনায়াসে বাংলা দখল করেন ইখতিয়ার উদ্দীন মোহাম্মাদ বিন বখতিয়ার খলজি। এরপর বাংলায় শুরু হয় পাঁচশ বছরের মুসলিম শাসন।
লখনৌ দখল ও রাজধানী :
তিনদিন ধরে নদীয়া লুট করে খলিজার সৈন্যবাহিনী। তারপর তারা গৌড় অঞ্চল দখলে বের হয়। বাংলার মতোই লখনৌ খুব সহজেই দখল করে খলজি। এরপর বাংলার রাজধানী করেন এই লখনৌকে। কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই বরেন্দ্র ও উত্তর বাংলার কিছু অঞ্চল দখল করেন খলজি। তবে আজকের বাংলাদেশ পুরো অঞ্চল দখল করেননি তার বাহিনী। বাংলার পুরো অঞ্চল দখল না করেই তিনি বের হন তিব্বত দখলের উদ্দেশ্যে ।
তিব্বত আক্রমণ ব্যর্থ :
বাংলার বিরাট অংশ দখল শেষ না করেই খলজি বের হন তিব্বত দখলের জন্য। দশ হাজার সৈন্য নিয়ে খলজি লখনৌ ত্যাগ করেন। কয়েকদিন ধরে চলার পর তিনি কামরুপ রাজার কাছ থেকে খবর পান এসময় তিব্বত আক্রমণ করা সমীচিন হবে না। কিন্তু খলজি তার কথা না শুনেই তিব্বত জয়ের বাসনা নিয়ে অগ্রসর হতে থাকেন। এসময় বিভিন্ন স্থানে স্থানীয় সৈন্যর সাথে তাদের সংঘর্ষ হয় ।
কিছুদিন পরেই খলজি জানতে পারেন করমবত্তন নামক একটি শহরে কয়েকলক্ষ সৈন্য তাদের প্রতিহত করার জন্য প্রস্তুত হয়ে আছে। এটা জানা পর খলজির সৈন্যবাহিনীর মনোবল ভেঙ্গে পড়ে। শেষ পর্যন্ত খলজি বাধ্য হন তার তিব্বত জয়ের বাসনা ত্যাগ করে ফিরে আসতে।
ফেরার পথে কয়েকটি পার্বত্য এলাকায় যুদ্ধের মুখোমুখি হতে হয় সৈন্যদের। এতে মারাত্বক ক্ষতি হয় খলজির সেনাবাহিনীর। মাত্র অল্প কয়েকজন সৈন্য নিয়ে দেবকোটে ফিরতে সমর্থ হন ব্যর্থ বখতিয়ার খলজি।
মৃত্যুবরণ :
বাংলায় মুসলিম শাসনের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা আর অসীম সাহসী খলজি তিব্বত পর্যন্ত যেতেই পারেননি। তার আগেই ব্যর্থ হয়ে ফিরে আসতে হয় তাকে। এই ব্যর্থতা খলজির জীবনে ব্যাপক প্রভাব ফেলে। শোক আর হতাশায় তিনি প্রচন্ড ভেঙ্গে পড়েন। অসুস্থ অবস্থায় ১২০৬ সালে দেবকোটেই মারা যান এই ভাগ্যান্বেষী যোদ্ধা মানুষটি। কারো কারো মতে খলজির মৃত্যুতে হাত ছিল তারই সহযোদ্ধা আলী মর্দানের। যিনি পরে বাংলার প্রথম স্বাধীন শাসক হয়েছিলেন মাত্র দু বছরের জন্য।
শেষ কথা :
নি:স্ব এক দরিদ্র ভাগ্যতাড়িত সৈনিক থেকে একটি রাজ্য প্রতিষ্ঠা, একটি রুপকথার গল্পের মতোই ছিল খলজির জীবন। মাত্র দুবছরের মধ্যেই সেই সফলতার পরিসমাপ্তি ঘটে। বখতিয়ারের এই বাংলা জয় ইসলাম প্রচারের উদ্দেশ্যে নাকি শুধু রাজ্য দখলের উদ্দেশ্যে ছিল তা নিয়ে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন মত রয়েছে । কিন্তু তার বাংলা জয়ের পর ইসলাম যে আরো দ্রুত ছড়িয়ে পড়তে থাকে এই অঞ্চলে তাতে কোন সন্দেহ নেই ।
বাংলাদেশ ও মুসলমান যতদিন থাকবে ততদিন আলোচিত হবে এই একটি নাম, সেটি হল ইখতিয়ার উদ্দীন মোহাম্মাদ বিন বখতিয়ার খলজি।
