ইমপোস্টার শব্দটির আভিধানিক অর্থ হচ্ছে প্রতারক, ঠক। শব্দটির বাংলা করতে গেলে সেটি দাঁড়াবে ‘প্রতারক ব্যাধি’। নামকরণ থেকে নিশ্চয়ই স্পষ্ট হলো না রোগের ধরনটা? সেটাই স্বাভাবিক। নামকরণের প্রাসঙ্গিকতা বুঝতে এক্ষেত্রে একটু আলোচনার প্রয়োজন।
জন স্টেইনবেক। একজন বিখ্যাত লেখক। তার একটি কথার মাধ্যমে ইমপোস্টার সিন্ড্রোম নামক মানসিক সমস্যাটি (বা অবস্থা) বুঝা যেতে পারে।
তিনি নিজের সম্পর্কে বলেছিলেন, “আমি আসলে কোন লেখক না। আমি নিজেকে বোকা বানিয়ে গেছি লেখক মনে করে ও অন্যদেরকেও।”
কিন্তু এই স্টেইনব্যাক ১৯৬২ সালে নোবেল পুরস্কার পেয়েছিলেন সাহিত্যে।

স্টেইনব্যাক এই যে এত বড় লেখক হয়েও ভাবলেন তিনি লেখক না, নিজেকে বোকা বানিয়ে গেছেন, এরকম ধারনা অনেক মানুষের হয়ে থাকে। তাদের মনে হতে থাকে যে, তারা যে অবস্থানে আছেন এই অবস্থানের যোগ্য তারা না। নিছকই ভাগ্যগুণে এখানে অবস্থান করছেন। এবং তারা যে যোগ্য না এটা ক্রমশই প্রকাশিত হয়ে যাচ্ছে বা যাবে।
এই মানসিক অবস্থাকে নাম দেয়া হয়েছে ‘ইমপোস্টার সিন্ড্রোম’।
মার্কিন মনস্তত্ববিদ পলিন ক্লেন্স ও সুজেন আইমেস ১৯৭৮ সালে সর্বপ্রথম ‘ইমপোস্টার সিনড্রোম’ পরিভাষা ব্যবহার করেন। এই পরিভাষা দ্বারা এক অদ্ভুত ধরনের মনস্তাত্ত্বিক দ্বান্দ্বিকতার কথা বলা হয়। এই দ্বন্দ্বে ভোগা একজন ব্যক্তি নিজেকে অপকৃষ্ট বা ইনফেরিয়র ভাববে নানা দিক থেকে, হোক সে বিদ্যা, বুদ্ধি, অর্থ, মর্যাদা, খ্যাতি ইত্যাদিতে ।
ইমপোস্টার সিন্ড্রোম বিশেষজ্ঞ ভ্যালেরি ইয়ং ৫ প্রকারের ইমপোস্টার সিন্ড্রোমে ভোগা লোকের কথা বলেছেন।
১। যারা জিনিয়াস।
২। যারা সুপার উইম্যান বা ম্যান।
৩। যারা সলোইস্ট মানে একা একাই কাজ করতে পছন্দ করেন।
৪। যারা এক্সপার্ট এবং
৫। যারা পারফেকশনিস্ট।
পারফেকশনিস্ট যারা, তারা সব কিছু নিখুঁত করতে চান এবং নিজেদের লক্ষ্য তারা খুবই উঁচুতে স্থাপন করেন। মাঝে মাঝে এটি হয় অসম্ভব একটা লক্ষ্য। আর সেই লক্ষ্যে পৌছাতে না পারলে তাদের মনে হয়, খুব সম্ভবত তাদের প্রতিভা নেই বা কম। এইজন্য একটা অবসাদে ভোগেন ও ইমপোস্টার সিন্ড্রোম তাদের তীব্র হয়।
জিনিয়াসদের ক্ষেত্রেও একই জিনিস হয়। তাদের ছোটবেলা থেকে মানুষ অতি প্রশংসা করে। বলে তাদের প্রত্যাশা অনেক বেড়ে যায়।
