পারভেজ সেলিম।।
মধুসূদন দত্তের লেখক জীবন শুরু ইংরেজি সাহিত্য দিয়েই। ইংরেজিতে কবিতা লিখেই কিছুটা নাম কামিয়ে ফেলেছিলেন তরুণ বয়সেই। প্রথম কাব্যগ্রন্হ ‘ক্যাপটিভ লেডি’ (১৮৪৯) যখন প্রকাশ পায় ইংরেজিতে ,তখন তার বয়স মাত্র ২৫। তিনি তখন ঘরসংসার করছেন মাদ্রাজের এক অনাথ ইংরেজ নারীর সাথে। এই কাব্যটি মাদ্রাজে কিছুটা সমাদর পেলেও কলকাতায় তেমন কোন আলোচনায় আসতে পারেনি। হতাশ হয়েছিলেন মধু। তবে এই বইটি প্রকাশের ফলে বাংলা সাহিত্যের বড় উপকার হলো।
কাব্যটি ব্যর্থ হবার ফলে মধুর যে মনভঙ্গের বেদনা তৈরি হয়, তা বাংলা ভাষায় সাহিত্য চর্চার দিকে মধুকে ঠেলে দেবার সূচনাও বলা যেতে পারে। বন্ধু গৌর বসাকের হাত ঘুরে বইটি ভারত প্রেমি ব্রিটিশ বেথুন সাহেবের হাতে পড়লে বিমোহিত হন তিনি। এর কাব্যগুণ বিচার করে মধুকে চিঠি লিখে বাংলায় সাহিত্যচর্চা শুরুর পরামর্শ দেন। যদি এই কাব্যটি খুব সফল হতো তাহলে বাংলার মধুসুদনকে হয়ত আমরা পেতামই না।
প্রথম গ্রন্হ প্রকাশের পরের দশবছর আর কোন গ্রন্হ প্রকাশ পায়নি মধুর। ধর্ম পরিবর্তনের ফলে পিতার সাথে সম্পর্ক চরমে ত্যাজ্য পুত্র তখন মধু। অর্থ সংকট শুরু হয়েছে সংসারে ।
তিনি মাদ্রাজ থেকে কলকাতায় ফিরে আসেন ১৮৫৬ সালে । কলকাতার বেলগাছিয়া নাট্যমঞ্চে নাটক দেখতে গিয়ে এর দৈন্যতা আর অর্থের অপচয় দেখে জেদের বসে নিজেই বাংলা নাটক লেখা শুরু করেন। রচিত হয় বাংলার প্রথম মৌলিক নাটক ‘শর্মিষ্ঠা (১৮৫৯) । এটি শুধু একটি নাটক নয় এটি বাংলা সাহিত্যের মোড় ঘুরিয়ে দেবার শুভসূচনা মাত্র ।
বিশাল প্রতিভাধর কবি বাংলা ভাষায় সাহিত্যচর্চা শুরু করেন এই নাটকটি দিয়ে । এরপর নেশার মত নাটক লিখতে থাকেন বাংলায়। মাত্র ৩ বছরে লেখেন ৫ টি নাটক। ‘বুড়ো শালিকের ঘাড়ে রো’ (১৮৬০), ‘একেই কি বলে সভ্যতা’ (১৮৬০) লিখে রোশানলে পড়েন নব্য শিক্ষিত একদল হিন্দু আর ধর্ম নিয়ে ব্যবসা করা গোড়া পন্ডিতদের। নাটক দুটি মঞ্চস্থই হতে পারেনা কলকাতায়। অভিমানে নাটক লেখা ছেড়ে দেন তিনি। মৃত্যুর আগে ‘মায়াকানন’ (১৮৭৩) নামে আর একটি মাত্র নাটক লিখায় হাত দিয়েছিলেন যা শেষ করে যেতে পারেননি।
এরপর কবি হাত দেন তার শ্রেষ্ট শিল্পকর্ম সৃষ্টির দিকে। এবার শুরু করেন বাংলায় কাব্য চর্চা। অমৃত্রাক্ষর ছন্দ প্রথম শুরু হয় তার হাতে। যদিও এই ছন্দ প্রথম ব্যবহার করেন নাটক ‘পদ্মাবতী’তে (১৮৫৯)। কাব্যে এই ছন্দ প্রথম ব্যবহার করেন ‘তিলোত্তমাসম্ভব কাব্যে’ (১৮৬০) এবং এরপর রচনা করেন তার সর্বশ্রেষ্ট সাহিত্যকর্ম ‘মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য’(১৮৬১)।

এই সাহিত্যকর্ম একটা বিদ্রোহ। বাংলা ভাষা এতদিন আটকে ছিল অন্তমিলের এক আজন্ম শৃঙ্খলে, যেন এই ভাষার একমাত্র নিয়তি মিত্রাক্ষর ছন্দ। তিনি এক ঝটকায় ছিঁড়ে ফেললেন সেই শৃঙ্খল। ভাষা পেল নতুন এক আলোর দিশা, মুক্ত হলো বাংলা ভাষা। মধুসূদনই বাংলা ভাষার প্রথম বিদ্রোহী কবি এবং মুক্তিদাতা।
বাংলা ভাষার প্রথম এবং একমাত্র মহাকাব্যটি মধুসূদনের লেখা। শুধু এই একটি মাত্র গ্রন্হ দিয়েই তিনি অমর হয়ে থাকতে পারতেন। এই কাব্যে তিনি যে শুধু ভাষায় নতুনত্ব আনলেন তা নয় কাহিনীর ক্ষেত্রে তিনি বিশাল এক বিদ্রোহ করে বসলেন। গল্প ধার করলেন রামায়ন থেকে। হাজার হাজার বছর ধরে যাকে মানুষ নায়ক হিসেবে জেনে এসেছে সেই রামকে তিনি বানিয়ে দিলেন দেশ দখলদার খলনায়কে আর এতদিনের রাক্ষস রাবনকে বানিয়ে দিলেন পুত্রশোকে কাতর এক মহানায়কে।
রবীন্দ্রনাথ পর্যন্ত এত বড় বিপ্লবকে প্রথমদিকে মেনে নিতে পারেননি। যদিও পরে তিনি মেনে নিয়েছিলেন মধুসূদনের এই অসাধারণ সৃষ্টির বৈচিত্রতাকে। পুরাণকে নতুনভাবে ব্যাখ্যার জন্য ইউরোপে রেনেসাঁস শব্দটি তখন জনপ্রিয়। মধুসূদন এই রেনেসাঁস শব্দ শোনার আগেই সৃষ্টি করছেন রেনেসাঁসের শিল্প। গবেষক গোলাম মুরশিদের মতে মধুসূদন তাই প্রথম রেনেসাঁস শিল্পী ।
লেখক মধুসূদনের মৌলিকত্ব এখানেই যে তিনি যখনই যা লিখেছেন তাতেই নতুনকিছু সৃষ্টি করেছেন । বাংলা ভাষায় যা একেবারে প্রথম। যদিও বেশিরভাগ কাঠামোই তিনি ইউরোপিয় শিল্প,সাহিত্য থেকে গ্রহণ করেছেন ।
পত্রকাব্যে নারীদের নতুন করে চেনালেন মধুসূদন। চরিত্র খুঁজে আনলেন সেই মহাভারত আর পুরাণ থেকে। তিনি ‘ব্রজঙ্গনা কাব্যে’ ( ১৮৬১) লিখলেন রাধার বিরহের কথা আর ‘বীরাঙ্গানা কাব্যে’ (১৯৬২) লিখলেন প্রেমিক কিংবা স্বামীকে লেখা ১১ পুরাণ নারীর দু:খ-বেদনার চিঠি । ‘কৃষ্ণকুমারী’র (১৮৬১) গল্প নেয়া রাজস্থানের উপকথা থেকে। পুরাণের অবহেলিত,বঞ্চিত চরিত্রগুলো মধুরহাতেই হয়ে উঠল প্রতিবাদী আর দৃঢ়চেতা রক্তমাংসের আধুনিক এক নারী।
মাদ্রাজ থেকে কলকাতায় ফেরার পর ১৮৫৬-১৮৬২ এই কয়েক বছরই তার সৃষ্টির স্বর্ণযুগ। তিনি তার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্বর্নগুলো ফলিয়েছেন এই ছয় বছরে। এরপর তিনি ইংল্যান্ড হয়ে ফ্রান্সে চলে যান ।

এরপর তার উল্লেখযোগ্য কাব্যটি তিনি লিখেন সুদূর ফ্রান্সে বসে। পশ্চিমের সনেট প্রথম তার হাত ধরে বাংলা ভাষায় ঢুকলো’ চতুর্থদশপদী কবিতাবলী’(১৮৬৬) কাব্যে । শুধু যে সনেট প্রথম বাংলায় লেখা হলো তা নয় কবি মধুসূদনের বাংলায় প্রতি যে মায়া জন্মেছে, দেশের প্রতি যে প্রেম তার চরমতম বহি:প্রকাশ ঘটে এই ১০২টি সনেটে। এটি একমাত্র কাব্যগ্রন্থ যেখানে মধুসূদনের ব্যক্তিভাবাগের ছবি পাওয়া যায়। ছোটবেলার কপোতাক্ষ নদের কথা মনে করে আপ্লুত কবি কপোতাক্ষকেই তার মতোই অমর করে দিয়ে গেলেন ইতিহাসে।
ফ্রান্স থেকে ফিরে হোমারের ইলিয়াডকে গদ্যে লিখতে শুরু করেছিলেন ‘হেক্টর বদ’ (১৮৭১) নামে। কিন্তু পুরোপুরি শেষ করতে পারেননি। শেষ করতে পারলে মধুসূদনের হাতে গদ্য না জানি কি সুন্দরই হতো !
লেখার বিষয়বস্তু :
মধুসূদন মাত্র ৪৯ বছর বেঁচেছিল। সবমিলিয়ে ১৭ টি গ্রন্হ লিখেছিলেন যার মধ্যে ইংরেজি ৫ টি। নাটক লিখেছিলেন ৬ টি বাকিগুলো কাব্যে আর কিছু অনুবাদ।
শুরুর দিকে লেখায় তার ব্যক্তি ভাবাবেগ দেখা যায়নি। সৃষ্টির রসদ তিনি নিয়েছিলেন পুরাণ, রামায়ন মহাভারত কিংবা উপকথা থেকে। ‘বুড়ো শালিকের ঘাড়ে রো’ আর ‘একেই বলে সভ্যতা’ ছাড়া লেখায় সমসাময়িক কোন বিষয়ে তার আগ্রহ লক্ষ্য করা যায় না। তার সাহিত্যচর্চার পুরোটাই পুরাণ আর হিন্দু ধর্মের চরিত্রের নুতনভাবে হাজির করা নিয়ে।
ফ্রান্সে বসে যখন তিনি সনেটগুলো লিখছেন তখনই প্রথম মধুসূদন রংক্তমাংসের মানুষ হিসেবে আবিভূত হলেন। লিখতে থাকলেন নিজের দু:খ, কষ্ট আর বেদনার কথা। স্বীকার করলেন ‘ আশার ছলনে ভুলি কি ফল লভিনু হায়…”
আজকের আধুনিক কবিরা যেমন খুব সহজে বলছে ‘আমি কি রকমভাবে বেঁচে আছি তুই এসে দেখে যা নিখিলেশ এই কি মানুষজন্ম? এই যে নিজের বোধকে এত উম্মুক্তভাবে প্রকাশ করা এটাও মদুসুদনই শুরু করেছিলেন। ছোটবেলার কপোতাক্ষকে মনে পড়ে মধুসূধন বললেন ‘সতত হে নদ তুমি পড়ো মোর মনে, সতত তোমার কথা ভাবি এ বিরলে,….আর কি হে হবে দেখা ? ।
গদ্যের রাজ্যত্ব শুরুর আগে মধুসূদনই তো বাংলা সাহিত্যের রাজা। কে আছে তার আগের রাজারা ? বড়ু চন্ডিদাস, নাকি কাহ্নপা ! মাঝখানে মুসুদন। তারপরে বঙ্কিম, রবিন্দ্রনাথ আর জীবনানন্দ ? এইতো বাংলা সাহিত্যের সম্রাটদের সংক্ষিপ্ত তালিকা। মধুসূদন সাহিত্যের যুগসন্ধির এক মহাণ সম্রাট।
১৮৭৩ সালের ২৯ জুন অস্তমিত হয় বাংলা সাহিত্যের এক আসামাণ্য প্রতিভাধর, বিদ্রোহী এবং বাংলা জাগরণের প্রধানতম মানুষটির। বয়স তখন তার মাত্র ৪৯ বছর ।
