পারভেজ সেলিম ।।
বাংলা ভাষা গড়ে উঠেছে অনেক মহান সাহিত্যিকদের চেষ্টা, শ্রম আর মেধায়। চর্যাপদকে যদি সবচেয়ে প্রাচীন নিদর্শণ ধরি তাহলে বাংলা ভাষার বয়স মাত্র এক হাজার বছর। এই এক হাজার বছরের রুপান্তরের মধ্য দিয়ে বাংলা ভাষা আজকের এই অবস্থানে এসেছে। আমাদের ভাষার সবচেয়ে বড় বাঁকটি হয়েছে সাহিত্যের আধুনিক যুগে এসে। এ যুগে যে কয়েকজন সাহিত্যিকের হাত ধরে বাংলা ভাষা সুউচ্চ আসনে উঠল তাদের মধ্যে প্রধানতম ব্যক্তিটি হলেন মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত।
‘মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য’ বাংলা সাহিত্যের শুধু এক অন্যন্য সৃষ্টি প্রথম মহাকাব্যই নয়, বাংলায় যে জাগরণের কথা বলা হয়, সাহিত্যে তা এই ‘মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য’ দিয়েই তার যাত্রা শুরু। এর স্রষ্টা মধুসূদন যদি আর কোন গ্রন্থ রচনা নাও করতেন তবু শুধু এই একটি মহাকাব্যের জন্য বাঙ্গালীর মানসে তিনি উজ্জ্বল হয়ে থাকতেন। এছাড়াও মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্তের সৃষ্টি আরো ব্যাপক, মৌলিক এবং প্রথম।
মধুসুদনের পরিচয় :
সাহিত্যিক মুধুসূদন বাংলা ভাষা ও সাহিত্যকে যে অন্য উচ্চতায় নিয়ে গেছেন তা এখন সর্বজন স্বীকৃত। তবে এর চাইতেও হয়ত বেশি আকর্ষনীয় তার বৈচিত্রময় জীবন। ব্যক্তিজীবনে মধুসূদন যেন মহাকাব্যের এক ট্রাজিক নায়ক, যার আকর্ষণে গত দেড়শ বছর ধরে বিমোহিত হয়ে আছে সারা বিশ্বের বাঙ্গালীর মন।
বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রের মতে,‘বাঙ্গালীর মধ্যে মনুষ্য জন্মিয়াছে কে? আমরা বলিব ধর্ম্মোপদেশকের মধ্যে শ্রী চৈতন্যদেব, দার্শনিকের মধ্যে রঘুনাথ, কবির মধ্যে শ্রী জয়দেব ও শ্রী মধুসূদন’।
সায়ম বন্দোপাধ্যায় বলছেন ‘মধুসূদন একসেন্ট্রিক জিনিয়াস। উদভ্রান্ত কবি। ক্ষোভে, অভিমানে আত্নবিনাশে উদ্যত। ধুমকেতুর মতো আর্বিভাব তার। তিনিই বাংলা কবিতার প্রথম আন্তর্জাতিক পুরুষ’।
আর গবেষক গোলম মুরশিদ এর মতে ‘মধুসূদন রেনেসাঁসের শিল্পী’।
জন্মেছেন বর্তমান বাংলাদেশের যশোরের সাগরদাঁড়িতে। জানুয়ারি মাসের ২৫ তারিখ, সালটি ১৮২৪। মনে প্রাণে হতে চেয়েছিলেন ইংরেজি বড় সাহিত্যিক। গোড়া হিন্দু পরিবারে জন্ম নেয়া মধু খ্রিষ্টান হয়েছিলেন সাহিত্যিক হবার আশায়। মধুসূদন হয়েছিল মাইকেল মধুসূদন। কিন্তু তার নাম যশ খ্যাতি কিছুই আসেনি ইংরেজি সাহিত্য সাধনা থেকে। তিনি ধুমকেতুর মতো এসে খুব অবলিলায় একের পর এক সোনা ফলিয়েছেন বাংলা ভাষায়।
কি বিচিত্র মধুর জীবন :
মধুসূদনের লেখার চাইতেও কি ব্যক্তিজীবন বেশি আকর্ষনীয়ও ? নাকি দুটোই । সাহিত্যে তার অবদান খোদাই করা হয়ে গেছে। তার এমন কিছু লেখা আছে যারা সাহিত্যের বিচারে খুবই উন্নত। তার দুএকটি লেখায় হয়ত তার মেধার অপচয় হয়েছে যেমন মায়াকানন, যেহেতু লেখাটি তিনি শেষ করে জাননি ধরে নেয়া যায় অন্যেরা সেটা শেষ করেছেন ।
গবেষক গোলাম মুর্শিদের মতে তিনি বাংলার প্রথম রেনেসাঁস ম্যান, বাংলার জাগরনের প্রথম মানব। তার কারণ যথার্থ। মধুসূধনের আগে আর কেউই ধর্মের প্রচলিত মিথকে ভিন্নচোখে ব্যাখা করেননি।
জন্ম ও ছোটবেলা কেটেছে যশোরের সাগরদাড়িতে। কলকাতার বড় উকিল পিতা রাজনারায়ন দত্ত। একমাত্র পু্ত্রকে ছেলেবেলায় শিক্ষায় কমতি রাখেননি পিতা মাতা। মা জাহ্ননী দেবীর হাতেই রামায়ন মহাভারত পুরাণ মগজে ঠুকে গেল। পাড়ার মৌলভীর কাছে শিখলের ফার্সি। আরো পরে ইংরেজি সহ ৬/৭ টি ভাষা। নতুন ভাষা শেখায় যেন মধুসসূদন বুদ হয়ে থাকতেন।
কলকাতার প্রথম জীবন :
ছোটবেলা কাটল বাংলাদেশের কপোতাক্ষ নদীর পাড়ে। বাবা কলকাতায় বড় বাড়ি কিনলেন ছেলেকে লেখাপড়া করাবেন বলে। ১৩ বছরে বয়সে কলকাতায় আসল মুধু। ভর্তি হলেন হিন্দু কলেছে ( বর্তমান প্রেসিডেন্সি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় )।
কি তার মনের ইচ্ছা ? মধু কবি হতে চায়। মহাকবি হওয়াই তার মনের একান্ত বাসনা। মিল্টন, দান্তে, শেলি, বায়রন কিংবা হোমার তাকে আচ্ছন্ন করে রাখে। ইংরেজিতে সাহিত্য চর্চা চলতে থাকে তার। ইংরেজি কবিতা লিখে বন্ধুদের মাঝে তখন তুমুল জনপ্রিয় আর আকর্ষনীর চরিত্র হয়ে ওঠে মধু।
হঠাৎ এক বিশাল কান্ড করে বসে মধুসূদন। হিন্দু থেকে খ্রিষ্টান হয়ে যান। সাল ১৮৪২ মধুর বয়স তখন সবেমাত্র ১৮। একেবারে পাদ্রীর কাছে ধর্মান্তরণের মন্ত্র পাঠ করে হিন্দু মধুসুদন দত্ত হয়ে যান খ্রিষ্টান মাইকেল মধুসূধন দত্ত।
মুধু কি সত্যি খ্রিষ্টান ধর্মকে এতটা ভালোবেসেছিল ? পরবর্তী পুরো জীবন ঘেটেও তার কোন প্রমাণ উদ্ধার করা যায় না। সেই সময় এই ধর্মান্তরনের ঘটনা বিশাল এক আলোচনা ব্যাপার হয় দাঁড়িয়েছিল। কেন তিনি এমনটি করেছিলেন?
বন্ধুদের সব সময় চমকে দেওয়া মধু এতটাই চমকিয়ে দিয়েছিল যে তাকে ভয় পেতে শুরু করেছিল বন্ধুরা। হিন্দুদের গোড়ামী কি তাকে বিদ্রোহী করে তুলেছিল ? গ্রাম্য এক বালিকার সাথে তাকে জোর করে বিয়ে দিতে চেয়েছিল তার বাবা সেখান থেকে পরিত্রানের জন্যই কি এই ব্যবস্থা ? সঠিক কারনটি একমাত্র মুধুই বলতে পারবেন।
জীবনের শেষ দিন পর্যন্ত আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে যেমন আর কোন ধর্ম গ্রহণ বা বর্জণ করেনি তেমনি কখনোই খ্রিষ্টন ধর্ম পালনও করেননি তিনি। পিতা রাজনারায়ন ত্যাজ্য পুত্র করেছিল শেষ পর্যন্ত এই ধর্মত্যাগের জন্য।

খ্রিষ্টান হওযায় আর হিন্দু কলেজে পড়া হলো না তার। বের হয়ে ভর্তি হলেন বিশপ্স কলেজে। পৃথিবীর তাবৎ মহৎ সাহিত্যের সাথে পরিচিত হতে থাকলেন এই কলেজে। কিন্তু ইংরেজদের অহংকার আর বৈষম্য তাকে বিদ্রোহী করে তুলেছিল। কলেজে হিন্দু পোষাক পরতে না দেয়ায় গন্ডগোল বাঁধিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন মধুসূদন।
মাদ্রাজ গমন :
এরপর একদিন কাউকে কিছু না জানিয়ে হঠাৎ মাদ্রাজ চলে যায় মধু। সাল ১৮৪৪, বয়স তখন ২০ বছর। সেখানে এক আনাথ ইংরেজ মেয়ে রেবেকাকে বিয়ে করেন। ৮ বছর সংসার ছিল তাদের। চারটি সন্তান দুই ছেলে দুই মেয়ে। এখানেই বসে ‘ক্যাপটিভ লেডি’(১৮৪৯) নামের একটি ইংরেজি কাব্য লেখেন মধুসুদন। এই কাব্য প্রকাশের পর বন্ধু গৌর বসাক বেথুনসাহেবকে এক কপি দিয়েছিলেন। সেই লেখা পড়ে মুগ্ধ বেথুন মধুকে অনুরোধ করে চিঠি লিখেছিলেন যেন বাংলায় লেখাখেলি শুরু করে মধু। এত বড় প্রতিভা বাংলা ভাষার জন্য খুবই প্রযোজন। মাদ্রাজে থাকতেই মারা যান মা এবং পরে বাবাও।
মধুর জীবনের শ্রেষ্ঠ ছয় বছর :
কলকাতায় ফিরে আসেন স্ত্রী সন্তানকে মাদ্রাজে রেখে। ততদিন অর্থকষ্ট শুরু হয়ে গেছে মুধুর । পিতার সম্পত্তি অন্যেরা ভোগদখল করে খাচ্ছে আর নিজে আছেন অর্থকষ্টে । অর্থসংস্থানের আশায় ফিরে আসেন কলকাতায় ১৮৫৬ সালে। এই ফিরে আসাই হলো বাংলা সাহিত্যের এক বিশাল বড় ঘটনা।
এর পরবর্তী ৬ বছরে বাংলা সাহিত্যে মাইকেল এক অবিসংবাদিত সূর্য়ের ন্যায় আবির্ভূত হবেন। একের পর সোনা ফলাবেন বাংলা সাহিত্যে। রইরই পড়ে যাবে চারিদেকে। তিলত্তোমাসম্ভব কাব্য, শর্মিষ্ঠা, মেঘনাদবধ কাব্য সহ তার জীবনের শ্রেষ্ঠ কাজগুলো এই কয়েক বছরে লিখে ফেললেন। ছয়টির মধ্যে পাঁচটি নাটকই তার এই সময়টুকুতে লেখা। বাংলার শ্রেষ্ট কবি হিসেব আবির্ভূত হলেন মধুসূদন। জীবনদশায় এমন নাম আর খ্যাতি খুব বেশি কবির ভাগ্য জোটেনি বাংলায় ।
হাহাকার নিয়ে ইউরোপ যাত্রা :
বাংলা সাহিত্যের শ্রেষ্টত্ব অর্জন করেও যেন তার মন ভরেনি মধুসুদনের। কি এক না পাওয়া তাকে অতৃপ্ত করে রেখেছে। খ্যাতি হলেও মুধুর অর্থকষ্টের সমাধান হয়নি তখনও। কাব্য চর্চাও যেন মনকে আর শান্তি দিতে পারছেনা কবিকে !!
এবার মধুর যাত্রা ইউরোপের দিকে নতুন কিছু আশায়। এর আগে মাদ্রাজ থেকে কলকাতায় আসার কিছুদিনের মধ্যে হেনরিয়েটনা নামের এক ফরাসী মেয়ের সাথে থাকতে শুরু করেছে মধু। হেনরিয়েটা আর সন্তানদের জন্য অর্থের ব্যবস্থা করে রেখে এবং নিজের জন্য টাকা পাঠানের বন্দোবন্ত করে ইংল্যান্ড চলে যান মধু ব্যারিষ্টারি পড়তে। ইংল্যান্ডে থাকতেই স্ত্রী আর সন্তানদের নিয়ে আসেন নিজের কাছে কিন্তু কলকাতা থেকে টাকা পাঠানো বন্ধ হয়ে গেলে মহাসংকটে পড়ে মধু। ভালো চাকরি জোগাড়ের চেষ্টাও ব্যর্থ হন তখন ।
ইংল্যান্ড থেকে এরপর প্যারিসের ভার্সাই নগরীতে চলে যান স্বপরিবারে। এখানে বসেই তার প্রিয় মাতৃভূমির জন্য কেঁদে ওঠে তার মন। এখানে বসেই তার বিখ্যাত চতুদর্শপদী বা সনেটগুলো লিখতে থাকেন ‘এ ভিখারি দশা কেনরে তোর আজি ? যা ফিরি অজ্ঞান তুই, যারে ফিরি ঘরে’।
অর্থকষ্ট ও ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র:
এসময় অর্থের সংকট এত প্রবল হয় যে দেনার দায়ে জেল যাবার জোগাড় হয়। আত্নহত্যার শংকার কথা জানিয়ে চিঠি লেখে বিদ্যাসাগরকে। ত্রাণকর্তার মত হাজির হন ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর। ততক্ষনাৎ দেড় হাজার টাকা পাঠিয়ে উদ্ধার করেন। এরপর ধারদেনা করে আরো টাকা পাঠানোয় ঈশ্বরচন্দ্রের মহানুভবতায় ব্যারিস্টারি শেষ করে কলকাতায় ফিরতে পারেন মধুসূদন।

শেষ জীবন কলকাতায় :
এরপর আর খুব বেশি লেখা হয়নি মধুসূদনের। ব্যারিস্টারি শুরু করা নিয়ে আদালতে নানা ঝামেলায় পড়তে হয় তাকে। হোটেল ছেড়ে ভাড়া বাড়িতে থাকতে শুরু করতে হয় অর্থাভাবে। দুহাতে আয় করে আবার দুহাতে খরচ করে উড়ানোই যেন তার নিয়তি তখন। অমিতব্যয়িতা ছিল মধুর আজন্ম নিয়তি। এর কারনে পুরো জীবন ভুগতে হয়েছে তাকে।
বাবার বাড়ি বিক্রি করে অন্যের কাছ থেকে নেয়া ঈশ্বরচন্দ্রের দেনা শোধ করা, মদ আর ধূমপান বাড়িয়ে নিজেকে নি:শব্দে শেষ করে দেয়া, এ সবই যেন নিয়তির এক অমোঘ নিয়মে ঘটে চলেছে মধুর জীবনে। এক অতৃপ্ত জীবন নিয়ে জন্মেছিল মধু। যা চাই তা না পাওয়ার এক হাহাকার নিয়ে জীবনের তীরে পৌঁছে গেল বাংলার মহান কবি মধুসুদন দত্ত। এপিটাফে পরিচয় নিশ্চিত করলেন মহাকবি ‘ দাঁড়াও পথিক বর জন্ম যদি তব বঙ্গে… শ্রী মদুসূধনে।
