দেশের সবচেয়ে বড় ধাতব বৌদ্ধ মুর্তিটি দেখতে পাওয়া যাবে কুমিল্লার শালবন বিহারের নব বৌদ্ধ মন্দিরে। শুধু দেশের নয় পুরো দক্ষিন পুর্ব এশিয়ায় মধ্যে এটি একটি অন্যতম বৌদ্ধ বিহার।
ঢাকা থেকে কুমিল্লা মাত্র দুই ঘন্টার পথ। দুরত্ব মাত্র ১০৫ কিমি.। বাসে কিংবা ট্রেনে করে খুব সহজে এবং স্বল্প সময়ে ঘুরে আসতে পারেন কুমিল্লার শালবন বিহার থেকে। মহাসড়কের পাশেই কান্দির পাড় এলাকা সেখান থেকে প্রথমে যেতে হবে কোটবাড়ি এলাকায় তারপর সেখান থেকেই শালবন বিহার।
বিখ্যাত শালবন বিহারে সাথেই নতুন এই দৃষ্টি নন্দন বৌদ্ধ মন্দিরটি স্থাপিত হয়েছে। বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের মানুষদের এই উপসানালয়টি স্থানীয়দের কাছে ‘নব শালবন বিহার বৌদ্ধ মন্দির’ হিসেবেই পরিচিতি লাভ করছে ।
কুমিল্লা জেলায় বতর্মানে প্রায় ১৫ হাজার বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের মানুষ বাস করে। ১৯৯৫ সালে ৮ সেপ্টেম্বরে নব শালবন বিহার ও বাংলাদেশ বৌদ্ধিষ্ট কালচারাল একাডেমি প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। । নতুন এই বিহারে আছে বৌদ্ধের মন্দির, স্কুল ও এতিমখানা, লাইব্রেরী, হোস্টেল সহ অনেককিছুই।

৩০ ফুট উচু ও ৬ টন ওজনের বুদ্ধের দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা মুর্তিটি দুর থেকে সহজেই দর্শনাথীদের মনোযোগ আকর্ষণ করে । বুদ্ধের এত বড় ধাতব মুর্তি বাংলাদেশের আর কোন বৌদ্ধ মন্দিরে নাই ।
প্রায় আড়াই একর জায়গা জুড়ে মন্দিরটি নির্মিত হয়েছে । দুইদিকের দুটি বিশাল সিঁড়ি মন্দিরটিকে মন্দিরের সৌন্দর্য্য কয়েকগুন বাড়িয়ে দিয়েছে ।
মন্দিরের ভিতরে প্রার্থণারত বৌদ্ধের মুর্তির পাশে সূর্যের আলো এসে পড়লে সে এক অপার্থিব রুপ নেয় বৌদ্ধের এই মুর্তিটি।
আর এর সৌন্দর্য দেখতেই দেশ- বিদেশ থেকে পর্যটকদের সংখ্যা দিন দিন বেড়ে চলেছে । আপনিও চাইলে ঘুরে আসতে পারেন ।
