১৮৮৭ সালে ছাব্বিশ বছরের রবীন্দ্রনাথ প্রথম চিঠি লেখেন ১৪ বছর বয়সী ইন্দিরাকে। ইন্দিরা মাত্র কিছুদিন আগেই বিলেত থেকে ফিরেছেন।
ইন্দিরা দেবী ছিলেন ভাই সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের মেয়ে। সম্পর্কে ভাতিজি। কাদম্বরী মারা যাবার পর রবীন্দ্রনাথের প্রাণের খবর সবচেয়ে বেশি পেয়েছিলেন এই কিশোরি।
বরীন্দ্রনাথ বিয়ে করেছেন বছর চারেক হলো। বিয়ের কয়েক মাসের মধ্যেই আত্নহত্যা করেন রবীর প্রিয় মানুষ বৌঠান কাদম্বরী দেবী।
স্ত্রী মৃনালিনী দেবী গ্রামের মেয়ে। ঠাকুর পরিবারের সবকিছুুকে খাপ খাইয়ে নিতে যেন সময় লাগছিল। রবীন্দ্রনাথও হয়ত বুঝে গিয়েছিলেন তার গভীর সুক্ষ মনের খবরে নেবার মত আগ্রহ কিংবা আনন্দ কোনটাই মৃনালিনীর ছিল না। দুজনের সম্পর্ক যেন সংসার আর প্রয়োজনে প্রয়োজনে কেটে যাচ্ছিল। কবির এমন এক বিষন্ন সময়ে ইন্দিরা ফিরে আসেন বিলেত থেকে ।
৫ বছরের সম্পর্কে ইন্দিরাকে ২৫২ টি চিঠি লিখেছিলেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ। আর এ সসময় স্ত্রী মৃনালিনী দেবীকে দিয়েছিলেন মাত্র ১৫ টি চিঠি আর ৫ টি সন্তান। চিঠির সংখ্যায় সম্পর্কের আচ পাওয়া যায়।
কাদম্বরীর পরে রবীন্দ্রনাথের জীবনের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপুর্ন নারী এই অল্প বয়সী ইন্দিরা দেবী।
রবীন্দ্রনাথ লিখছেন ইন্দিরাকে
‘একবার যদি এই রুদ্ধ জীবনকে খুব উদ্দাম উচ্ছৃঙ্খলভাবে ছাড়া দিতে পারতুম, একেবারে দিগবিদিক ঢেউ খেলিয়ে ঝড় বইয়ে দিতুম, কিন্তু আমি বেদুইন নই, বাঙালী।……যাকগে যখন রীতিমত অসভ্য হওয়া অসাধ্য তখন রীতিমত সভ্য হওয়ার চেষ্টা করাই সংগত।’
সভ্য অসভ্যের মানদন্ডে দাঁড়িয়ে গিয়েছিল রবীন্দ্রনাথ ও ইন্দিরার মানসিক সম্পর্ক।
ইন্দিরা ছিলেন একেবারে স্ত্রী মৃনালিনী সমবয়সী। সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর আর জ্ঞানদানন্দিনীর কন্যা। ঠাকুর পরিবারের বি এ পাশ করা প্রথম নারী।
১৮৯৯ সালে নিজের পছন্দে সাহিত্যিক প্রমথ চৌধুরীকে বিয়ে করেন ইন্দিরা। সাতাশি বছরের দীর্ঘ জীবন পেয়েছিলেন ইন্দিরা দেবী চৌধুরাণী (১৮৭৩-১৯৬০) ।
রবীন্দ্রনাথের মৃত্যুর উনিশ বছর পর ১৯৬০ সালে ১২ আগষ্ট মত্যুবরণ করেন এই বিদুষী নারী।
