বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের জন্ম ১৯২০ সালের ১৭ মার্চ গোপালগঞ্জ জেলার টুঙ্গিপাড়ায়। তাঁর বাবার নাম শেখ লুৎফর রহমান, মা সায়েরা খাতুন। ছয় ভাই-বোনের মধ্যে শেখ মুজিব ছিলেন তৃতীয়।
 
২৩ জুন ১৯৪৩ সালে প্রাদেশিক মুসলিম লীগের কাউন্সিলর হন। ১৯৪৮ সালে রাষ্ট্রভাষা বাংলার দাবিতে ধর্মঘট ডাকায় গ্রেপ্তার হন।
 
২৩ জুন , ১৯৪৯ সাল পূর্ব পাকিস্তান আওয়ামী মুসলিম লীগ গঠিত হয় এবং জেলে থাকা অবস্থায় যুগ্ম-সম্পাদক হন।
 
১৯৫৩ সাল সাধারণ সম্পাদকের দায়িত্ব পান । ১৭ জুন, ১৯৫৫ ঢাকার পল্টনের জনসভা থেকে পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের স্বায়ত্বশাসন দাবি করেন।
 

১৯৬৬ সাল বঙ্গবন্ধু আওয়ামী মুসলীম লীগের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হন। লাহোরে বিরোধী দলগুলোর জাতীয় সম্মেলনে শেখ মুজিব ছয় দফা দাবি উত্থাপন করেন

৩ জানুয়ারী, ১৯৬৮ বঙ্গবন্ধুকে এক নম্বর আসামী করে আগরতলা ষড়যন্ত্র মামলা দায়ের করে। ১৯৬৯ সালে তা প্রত্যাহারে বাধ্য হয় সরকার।

২৩ ফেব্রুয়ারি, ১৯৬৯ ঢাকায় এক সমাবেশে তাঁকে ‘বঙ্গবন্ধু‘ উপাধি দেওয়া হয়।
 
৫ ডিসেম্বর, ১৯৬৯ এক জনসভায় বঙ্গবন্ধু পূর্ব বাংলার নামকরণ করেন ‘বাংলাদেশ‘।
 
১৯৭১ সাল বঙ্গবন্ধুর ৭ মার্চের ঐতিহাসিক ভাষণ বাঙালি জাতির কাছে ছিল মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ‘গ্রিন সিগন্যাল‘। ১৭ এপ্রিল বঙ্গবন্ধুকে রাষ্ট্রপতি করে প্রবাসী সরকার গঠিত হয়।
 
১০ জানুয়ারি, ১৯৭২ পাকিস্তান কারাগার থেকে মুক্তি পেয়ে স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশে ফিরে আসেন।
 
১৯৭৩ সাল বাংলাদেশে প্রথম জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে বাংলাদেশ আওয়ামী লীগ বঙ্গবন্ধুর নেতৃত্বে ৩০০টির মধ্যে ২৯২টি আসনে বিজয়ী হয়।
 
২৪ সেপ্টেম্বর, ১৯৭৪ সাল বঙ্গবন্ধু প্রথম বাঙালি নেতা হিসেবে জাতিসংঘে বাংলায় বক্তৃতা করেন।
 
১৫ আগস্ট, ১৯৭৫ বিপথগামী সেনা সদস্যদের হাতে জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান সপরিবারে শহীদ হন। বিদেশে থাকায় তাঁর দুই মেয়ে শেখ হাসিনা ও শেখ রেহানা বেঁচে যান।
