ইটালীয়ান শব্দ ‘ক্যাসিনোর’ অর্থ হলো জুয়া খেলার নিদিষ্ট স্থান বা জায়গা। মদ, জুয়া যৌনতাসহ আপাতভাবে সকল খারাপ কাজের একটি স্থান হলো এই একটি স্থান হলো এই ‘ক্যাসিনো’। আর এজন্য হয়ত ক্যাসিনোর রাজধানী আমেরিকার ‘লাস ভেগাসকে’ বলা হয় সিন সিটি বা পাপের শহর ।
তবে ক্যাসিনো মানে যে শুধু জুয়ার আসর তা নয় যেমন ফিনল্যান্ডের হ্যাংকো কেসিনোতে কখনো জুয়া খেলা হয়নি । এটি এখন একটি রেস্তোরা। আবার জার্মান কিংবা স্পেনে ‘ক্যাসিনো’ বলতে তার বোঝে অফিসারদের মেস বা বসবাসের জায়গামেস বা বসবাসের জায়গা।
তবে বর্তমান পৃথিবীতে ‘ক্যাসিনো’ একটি লাভজনক ব্যবসা। প্রায় ৩৫০০ ক্যাসিনো আছে সারা পৃথিবীতে । শুধুমাত্র এই ক্যাসিনোর ব্যবসা দিয়ে কোন কোন শহর গড়ে উঠেছে পৃথিবীতে।আমেরিকার লাসভেগাস ও চীনের ম্যাকাও তার সবচেয় সফল উদাহরন।
জুয়া খেলার ইতিহাস :
জুয়া পৃথিবীদের আদিমতম খেলাগুলোর একটি। তাই এর সঠিক সময় নির্ধারণ করা কঠিন। পাঁচ হাজার বছর আগের ‘মহাভারতে’ও দেখা গেছে এই জুয়া বা পাশা খেলা। মামা শুকনির কাছে এই খেলায় দ্রোপদীকে বাজি ধরে হেরে গিয়েছিল যুধিষ্ঠির শুকনির কাছে এই খেলায় দ্রোপদীকে বাজি ধরে হেরে গিয়েছিল যুধিষ্ঠির। এরপর গ্রিক-রোম কিংবা আরব সব যুগেই কোন না কোনভাবে এই জুয়া খেলার প্রচলন দেখা গেছেকোনভাবে এই জুয়া খেলার প্রচলন দেখা গেছে । তবে এই জুয়া ঘরে বসা খেলা শুরু হয় প্রথমইউরোপে। ১৬৩৮ সালে ভেনিস শহরে সর্বপ্রথম একটি ক্যাসিনো খোলা হয় যার নাম
