পারভেজ সেলিম ।।
পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে প্রাচীন মহাকাব্য হচ্ছে ‘মহাভারত’। সংস্কৃত ভাষায় রচিত মহাকাব্যটি লিখেছে ‘ব্যাসদেব’। শব্দ মোট আটারো লক্ষ। ইলিয়াড ওডিসির ১০ গুন বড়। রামায়নের চারগুন। কিন্তু এই মহাভারত লিখা হলো কবে ? এটাই কি পৃথিবীর প্রাচীনতম গ্রন্হ ?
মহাভারতের লিখছেন ‘ব্যাসদেব’ বা ‘বেদব্যাস’ । কেউ বলে ব্যাস একজন ঋষী ছিলেন । কেউ বলে পাগল । মহাভারত লেখা নিয়ে একটি গল্প প্রচলিত আছে। দেবতা গনেশকে লিখতে বললে তিনি শর্ত দেন যে তিনি লিখা শুরু করলে আর থামবেন না। ব্যাস বললেন, তিনি যে শ্লোক বলবেন সে না বুঝে লিখবেন না। দুজনে রাজি হলেন।
্ব্এরপর বুদ্ধিমান মাঝে মাঝে এমন কঠিন শ্লোক বলতেন যা বুজতে বেশ সময় লাগতো গনেশের । আর এই সময়ে ব্যাস অন্য শ্লোকগুলো মনে করতেন। এভাবে ব্যাস বলতেন আর গনেশ লিখতেন । এভাবে তিন বছরে লিখা হয় মহাভারত। কিন্তু কবে ?
মহাভারত রচনার সঠিক সময় এখন বের করা প্রায় অসম্ভব । তবে প্রচলিত ধারণা এবং গবেষকদের গবেষনায় মহাভারত রচনাকালের সময় সমন্ধে ধারণা পাওয়া যায় ।

পরে সৌতি নামের এক মুনী ‘ভারত’ এর গল্পগুলোকে আঠারো খন্ডে ভাগ করেন । এটি ‘মহাভারত’ নামে পরিচিতি পায়। এই ঘটনার সময় কাল ২০০০ খ্রী.পূ।মানে আজ থেকে চার হাজার বছর আগে।
পরে যখন লিখন পদ্ধতি আবিস্কার হয় তখন প্রথমে ব্রাষ্মী লিপিতে লিপিবন্ধ করা হয়। পরে সংস্কৃতি ভাষায় লিপিবদ্ধ করা হয় ‘মহাভারত’। এর সময়কাল ১২০০-৬০০ খ্রী.পূ ।
তবে ‘মহাভারত’লেখার এই সময়কালের কি কোন প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায়? নাকি এসব শুধু অনুমান ? চলুন ইতিহাসের সাথে মেলাই মহাভারত রচনার সময়কালকে বের করা যায় কিনা !

‘মহাভারতে’ গুপ্ত বা মৌর্য সম্রাজের কোন কথা নাই। এই সম্রাজের সময়কাল ১০০০ খ্রী.পু। এছাড়া জৈন ও বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের কথাও পাওয়া যায় না মহাভারতে। যার সময়কাল ৭০০-২০০ খ্রী. পূর্বের। তবে ‘উপনিষদ’ যা ১১০০ খ্রী.পূর্বে রচিত সেখানে মহাভারতের অনেক কিছু পাওয়া যায়। তাহলে এই তথ্যের উপর ভিত্তি করে বলা যায় ‘মহাভারত’১০০০ খ্রী.পুর্বের আগেই লিখা হয়েছিল ।
এবার আসা যাক প্রত্নতত্ত্বের প্রমাণের দিকে :
ভারতের পুরাতত্ত্ব বিভাগ গুজরাটে সমুদ্রের গভীরে একটি ৩৫০০-৪০০০ হাজার বছরের ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত পুরাতন নগরী আবিস্কার করেছে। পুরাতত্ত্ববিদেরা এটাকে মহাভারতের বর্নিত দ্বারকা নগরী হিসেবে উল্লেখ করেছেন ।
সবকিছু বিচার করলে এই সিদ্ধান্তে আসা যায় যে মূল মহাভারত রচনাকাল ৩০০০ খ্রিষ্টপূর্বাব্দ অথবা ১৯০০ খ্রিষ্টপূর্বাব্দের মধ্যে হয়েছিল। যদিও আধুনিককালে যে সংস্করণগুলি আমরা পাই তা ৬০০-২০০ খ্রিষ্ট পূর্বাব্দের মধ্যে তৈরী হয়েছিল বলে ধরে নেয়া হয়।
অবশ্য পশ্চিমাদের মতে মহাভারত নয় ‘গিলগামেশ মহাকাব্যই’ সবচেয়ে প্রাচীন সাহিত্যের নিদর্শণ। এর রচনা কাল ২১০০ খ্রী. পুর্বাব্দে। আর তাদের মতে মহাভারত লেখা হয়েছে ১৫০০-১২০০ খ্রী.পুর্বাব্দের মধ্যে।
