আলেকজান্ডার হচ্ছেন পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে প্রভাবশালী যোদ্ধা। মাত্র ৩২ বছর বয়সে যিনি পৃথিবীর অর্ধেকটাই দখল করে ফেলেছিল। গ্রিস থেকে ভারতের পাঞ্জাব দখলে তিনি একটি যুদ্ধেও হারেনি। ইতিহাসের এই পরাক্রমশালী যোদ্ধার কথা মানুষ দুই হাজার বছর পরও মনে রেখেছে। সবাই তাকে চেনে আলেকজান্ডার, আলেকজান্ডার দ্যা গ্রেট নামে ।
কিন্তু কিভাবে এত অল্প বয়সের একজন তরুণ এত বিশাল সম্রাজ্য জয় করলো ? কত শক্তিশালী ছিল তার সেনাবাহিনী? অথবা ব্যক্তি আলেকজেন্ডার কি উভয়কামি ছিলেন ? কিভাবে মৃত্যু হলো আলেকজান্ডারের বিষে নাকি ম্যালেরিয়ায় ? আলেকজেন্ডার কি সত্যিই মহান যোদ্ধা ছিলেন নাকি ছিলেন একজন দুর্ধর্ষ খুনি?
পুরো ধারাবাহিক জুড়ে আমার এরকম আরো নানা প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজব। নজর দেবো আলেকজান্ডারের জন্ম, মৃত্যু, শিক্ষা, প্রেম এবং যুদ্ধসহ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ঘটনাগুলোর দিকে।
আজ পঞ্চম কিস্তিতে নজর দেয়া যাক আলেকজান্ডার যে সকল যুদ্ধে অংশ নিয়েছিল তার উপর।
যুদ্ধ: কোন কোন যুদ্ধ কিভাবে জিতল আলেকজেন্ডার ?
পৃথিবীতে যে কয়জন যোদ্ধা কোন যুদ্ধে হারেননি আলেকজান্ডার তার মধ্যে একজন। তার চাইতে বেশি রাজ্য দখল করতে পেরেছিল শুধুমাত্র আর একজন আর তিনি হলেন চেঙ্গিস খান। কিন্তু কোন কোন যুদ্ধ জিতেছিল আলেকজেন্ডার?
রাজা হবার আগে আলেকজান্ডারের সবচেয়ে বড় যুদ্ধ জিতেছিল ‘করোনয়িায়’যুদ্ধ। এই যুদ্ধ ছিল এথেন্স ও থিবস বাহিনীর বিরুদ্ধে।১৮ বছর বয়সে জেতা এই যুদ্ধে ছোটবেলার বন্ধু, টলেমি, হেফাসটিওন, ফিলোটাস খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভুমিকা রেখেছিল এই যুদ্ধে।
অনেকে মনে করেন এথেন্স জয়ের কারনেই পরবর্তীতে তার মেসিডোনিয়ার রাজা হবার পথ সুগম হয়েছিল। অনেকেই তখন বাবার চাইতে বেশি শক্তিশালী যোদ্ধা ভাবতে শুরু করে পুত্রকে। আর এই জয়ে ফিলিপ সমগ্র গ্রিকের প্রধান সেনানায়ক হয়ে উঠেছিলেন। এরপরই পারস্য জয়ের স্বপ্ন দেখতে শুরু করেনরাজা দ্বিতীয় ফিলিপ।
খ্রি.পু. ৩৩৬ সালে দেহরক্ষির হাতে ফিলিপ নিহত হলে, রাস্ট্র ক্ষমতা চলে আসে পুত্রের হাতে। অল্প বয়সী আলকেজান্ডারকে তখন অনেক রাস্ট্র রাজা হিসেবে মেনে নিতে চায়নি। তিনি জানতেন ঘর সামলাত না পারলে বাইরে গিয়ে কিছুই কআ যাবে না। তাই গ্রিকের বিদ্রোহী রাজ্য গুলোকেশক্তহাতে দমন শুরু করেন আলেকজেন্ডার ।
থেবস, এথেন্স, থিসিলি সহ অনেক রাষ্ট্রে এক একের পর অভিযান চালান তিনি। সবাইকে ভয় দেখানোর জন্য থেবস রাজ্যকে পুরোপুরি ধ্বংস করে দিয়েছিলেন। এই শহরের ত্রিশ হাজার মানুষকে দাস হিসেবে বিক্রি করে দেয়া হয়েছিল। তবে একটি বাড়ি ধ্বংস করেননি আলেকজান্ডার তা হলো কবি পিন্দারের বাড়ি। কারন কবি পিন্দারকে খুব পছন্দ করতেন আলেকজান্ডার ।

পুরো গ্রিক তার নিয়ন্ত্রণে আসার পর, বাবার অভিজ্ঞ ও বিশ্বস্ত সেনাপতি এন্টিপাতের হাতে গ্রিকের ভার দিয়ে তিনি বেরিয়ে পড়েন পারস্য সম্রাজ্য দখলের স্বপ্ন নিয়ে । সময়টা হল ৩৩৪ খ্রি.পু বসন্তকাল। আজকের তুরুস্কের হেলস্পট দিয়ে এশিয়া যাত্রা শুরু করেন তিনি। এটা ছিল প্রাচীন ইতিহাসে সেনাবাহিনীর সবচেয়ে বড় আগ্রাসন।
পারস্য বাহিনীর সাথে যে তিনটি বড় যুদ্ধ হয় তার প্রথমটি ‘গ্রানিকাস’ নদীর পাশে।
এই যুদ্ধে আলেকজান্ডার মৃত্যুর মুখে পড়েছিল। দুইজন পারস্যের যোদ্ধা দ্বারা আক্রান্ত হয়ে আলেকজান্ডার মাটিতে পড়ে যান এবং তার বুকে ছুরি বসানোর ঠিক আগ মুহুর্তে কোথা হতে উড়ে এসে আক্রমনকারির হাত এক কোপে কেটে ফেলেছিলেন সেনাপতি ক্লাইটাস। নিশ্চিত মৃত্যুর হাত থেকে রক্ষা পান আলেকজান্ডার ।
এই যুদ্ধে গ্রিকরা দুই পক্ষেই যুদ্ধ করেছিল।পারস্যের পক্ষে কিছু সৈন্য যুদ্ধ করেছিল শুধু স্বর্ন লাভের আশায় আর আলেকজান্ডার পক্ষে যুদ্ধ করেছিল বাধ্য হয়ে কারন তাদের দেশ তখন আলেকজান্ডারের দখলে। যুদ্ধ শেষে আলেকজান্ডার তাই মনে করেছিলেন গ্রিক যোদ্ধারা এই যুদ্ধে গা বাঁচিয়ে যুদ্ধ করেছেন।
‘গ্রানিকাসের’যুদ্ধে এই অপ্রতিরোদ্ধ বাহিনীর কাছে হেরে যায় পারস্য বাহিনী। সৈন্যরা ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করেও কেউ বাঁচতে পারেনি। কচুকাটা করা হয় পারস্য বাহিনীকে। ইতিহাসের জঘন্যতম হত্যাকান্ড ঘটে এই যুদ্ধে।তখনকার পরাক্রমশালী পারস্য সম্রাজের বিরুদ্ধে আলেকজান্ডারের এটা ছিল এক বিশাল জয় ।
এরপর জয়ী বাহিনী সামনের দিকে আগাতে থাকলে সহজেই সবকিছু আলেকজান্ডারের দখলে চলে আসে। কিন্তু বিদ্রোহ করে বসে ছোট একটি দ্বীপ রাস্ট্র টায়ার। কোন ভাবেই আলেকজান্ডারের বশ্যতা স্বীকার করছিল না তারা। এক মাইল নদী পার হয়ে দ্বীপে যেতেও পারছিল না আলেকজান্ডারের সৈন্যরা। ৭ মাসের চেষ্টা শেষে টায়ার আক্রমণ করে আলেকজেন্ডারের বাহিনী। এর পর যা ঘটে তা ইতিহাসের আরেকটি বর্বরোচিত হত্যাকান্ড।
ছয় হাজার টায়ার বাসীকে কেটে টুকরো করা হয়, দুই হাজারজনকে ক্রশবিদ্ধ করে নদীর পাশে ফেলে রাখা হয় বাকি ৩০ হাজার নারী বৃদ্ধ ও শিশুকে দাস হিসেবে বিক্রি করে দেওয়া হয়। পুরো যুদ্ধ জীবনে প্রথম এমন নির্মম নৃসংশ হত্যাকান্ড চালান আলেকজান্ডার । এরপর গাজা দখল করতে গিয়েও একই রকম হত্যাকান্ড ও বর্বরতার পরিচয় দিয়েছিল আলেকজান্ডারের বাহিনী ।
এরপর তারা লিডিয়া, লাইসিয়া, ফ্রিজিয়া, গডিয়াম দখল করে কোনধরনের প্রতিরোধ ছাড়াই। এখানেই গড়িয়াম নটের বিখ্যাত ঘটনা ঘটে। কয়েকশ বছর ধরে একটি ষাড়ের গাড়ী আর জোয়ালে এত জটিল করে রশির গিট বাধা ছিল যে কেউ খুলতে পারতো না। প্রচলিত ছিল এই গিট যে খুলতে পারবে সেই হবে এই দেশের রাজা এবং সেই পুরো এশিয়া শাসন করবে। আলেকজান্ডার মুহুর্তেই তলোয়ারের এক কোপে দু টুকরা করে ফেলেছিল সেই ‘গরডিয়াম নট’।
এর পর থেকে আপাতভাবে খুব জটিল দেখতে কোন একটি সমস্যার সমাধান যদি মুহুর্তেই খুব জোরের সাথে সহজভাবে দিয়ে দেয় তাকে বলা হত ‘গরডিয়ান নট’। পরবর্তীকালে ইংরেজি সাহিত্য এই রুপক শব্দযুগলের বহুল ব্যবহৃত হয় ।
এরই মধ্যে যুদ্ধে যুদ্ধে চলে গেছে ১৮ মাস। সাল ৩৩৩ খ্রি.পূ নভেম্বর মাস। সিসিলি জয়ের পর সিরিয়ার ‘ইসাসে’ গিয়ে পারস্যে বাহিনীর কাছে আবার যুদ্ধ বাধে। এটি পারস্য বাহিনীর সাথে ২য় বড় যুদ্ধ। পারস্যের রাজা দারুয়ুস নিজে এই যুদ্ধে যোগ দেন এবং এই যুদ্ধেও প্রচুর হত্যাকান্ড ঘটে। মৃত মানুষ দেখে বুন্ধু টলেমি আলেকজান্ডারকে বলেছিলেন, ‘এই মৃত শরীরগুলো যদি পাহাড়ের খাদে দেয়া যায় তাহলে সৈন্যরা অনাসয়ে পাহাড় অতিক্রম করে যেতে পারবে’। ‘ইসাসের’যুদ্ধে হারার পর পালিয়ে যায় পারাস্যের পরাক্রমনশালী রাজা দারুয়ুস ।
এরপর কোন প্রতিরোধ ছাড়াই মিশর সহজে দখল হয়ে যায়। বাহিনীকে রাস্তায় রাস্তায় স্বাগত জানায় মিসরবাসী । সবাই পারস্য রাজার অত্যাচারে অতিষ্ট ছিল তাদের মুক্তিদাতা হিসেবে গন্য করেছিল আলেকজান্ডারকে । তাকে তাদের সর্বোচ্চ দেবতা ‘আমুনের সন্তান’ উপাধী দেয় মিশরেরমানুষ। তাদের নতুন ফারাও হয়ে যান আলেকজান্ডার ।
এখান থেকে আবার টায়ারে ফেরত যাবার সময় খবর পান মেসিডোনিয়ার বিরুদ্ধের যুদ্ধ শুরু করেছে স্পার্টারা।
এন্টিপাত সেই যুদ্ধ ভালোভাবে সামাল দেবার ফলে আলেকজান্ডারকে আর মেসিডেোনিয়ায় ফেরত যেতে হয় না।
আলেকজান্ডার এবার খুঁজতে বের হয় পারস্যের পালিয়ে যাওয়া রাজা দারুয়ুসকে। দারুযুস তখন বিশাল সম্রাজ্যের অন্য প্রান্তে চলে গেছে। সেখান থেকে সে যুদ্ধ না করার প্রস্তাব পাঠায় আলকেজান্ডারের কাছে। অর্ধেক রাজ্য, রাজকন্যা, সোনাদানা দিয়ে শান্তি স্থাপন করতে চায় দারুয়ুস কিন্তু আলেকজেন্ডার বলেন তিনি অর্ধেক দখল করতে আসেননি তিনি এসেছেন পুরোটাই দখল করতে।
খুঁজতে খুঁজতে ৩৩১খ্রি. পু ১অক্টোবরে ‘গুয়াগামেলা’ নামক স্থানে পারস্যের বিশাল সৈন্য বাহিনীর সাথে গ্রীক বাহিনীর দেখা হয় । ‘গুয়াগামেলার যুদ্ধ’ পারস্যে বাহিনীর সাথে আলেকজান্ডারের শেষ বড় যুদ্ধ। পারস্যের সৈন্য ছিল ৭০ হাজার আর গ্রিক বাহিনীর সৈন্য ছিল তার অর্ধেক। এই যুদ্ধে কয়েকশ গ্রিক সৈন্য মারা যায় আর পারস্যের মারা কয়েক হাজার যোদ্ধা। কিন্তু রাজা দারুয়ুস এবারও পালাতে সক্ষম হন। ‘গুয়াগামেলা’যুদ্ধ জয়ের পরই পারস্যে আলেকাজন্ডারের দখলে চলে আসে।
এরপর রাজধানী ব্যবলিনের দিকে যাত্রা শুরু করেআলেকজান্ডার। সুসা শহরে তাকে পারস্যের বৈধ সম্রাট হিসেবে মুকুট পরানো হয়। ব্যবিলন পৌঁছার পর এর সৌন্দর্য্য দেখে মুগ্ধ হয় যান অ্যালেকজ্যান্ডার। অ্যারিস্টটলের কাছে তারা সবসময় শুনে এসেছে পারস্যের মানুষ খুবই বর্বর এবং কিন্তু বাস্তবে এত সুন্দর শহর দেখে এত মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলেন যে তিনি ও তার বাহিনী ব্যাবিলনে এসে অ্যারিস্টটলের জানাশোনা নিয়ে টিপ্পনী কেটেছিলেন।
৩৩০ খ্রি.পু. সে সময়ের আরেক সমৃদ্ধশালী শহর ‘পারসোপলিসকে’ জ্বালিয়ে দেয় আলেকজেন্ডার। কেউ বলে দেড়শ বছর আগে পারস্যের আগ্রাসনের প্রতিশোধ হিসেবে এই জঘন্য কাজ করেছেন তিনি। কেউ বলে সে এই সিদ্ধান্ত নেবার সময় মধ্যপ ছিলেন আলেকজান্ডার নয়ত এমন জঘন্য সিদ্ধান্ত তিনি নিতেন না। যেমন তিনি ব্যবিলন ও সুসা শহরের কোন ক্ষতি করেন নি ।
পারাস্যের পলাতক রাজা দারুযুস নির্মমভাবে খুন হন তারই গর্ভনর বেসাসের হাতে। এরপর বেসাস নিজেকে পারস্যের নুতুন রাজা ঘোষনা করেন। আর এই ঘোষনাকে কোনভাবে মেনে নিতে পারেননি আলেকজান্ডার । তিনি বলেছিলেন,’এক আকাশে যেমন একটাই সূর্য তেমনি এক পারস্যে একটাই রাজা থাকবে আর সেটা হল আলেকজান্ডার’।
মৃত দারুযুসকে সম্মানের সহিত পারস্যের রাজকীয় সামাধীস্থলে সমাহিত করে বেসাসকে খুঁজতে বের হয় আলেকজেন্ডার।
বেসাসকে খুঁজতে খুঁজতে বর্তমান আফগানিস্তানের কান্দাহার পর্যন্ত চলে আসে আলেকজান্ডারের বাহিনী। কুন্দুজ পৌঁছালে বেসিসের লোকজনই তাকে ধরিয়ে দেয়। বেসিসকে নির্মমভাবে হত্যার মাধ্যমে তার মৃতুদন্ড কার্যকর করে আলেকজান্ডার।
৩২৭ খ্রি পু. জ্যাকসারটিস নদীর পাশে যুদ্ধ দিয়ে তার পারস্য জয় শেষে হয় আলেকজান্ডারের বাহিনী। ততক্ষনে সে হিন্দুকুস পর্বত পার হয়ে এসেছে। এই পর্বতের কথা অ্যারিস্টটলের কাছে সে অনেক শুনেছে। আর এই পর্বতের ওপারেই পৃথিবীর শেষ প্রান্ত। এবার সেই শেষ প্রান্ত জয়ের বাসনা তার মনে উঁকি দিতে থাকে। ভারত আক্রমনের জন্য সামনে আগাতে থাকে আলেকজান্ডার
