ইসলামে শহীদ হওয়া প্রথম মানুষটি ছিলেন একজন নারী। যার নাম সুমাইয়া। পুরো নাম সুমাইয়া বিনতে খাব্বাত।
সুমাইয়ার জন্ম হয়েছিল তৎকালীন আরবের নিম্নগোত্রের পরিবারে। যাদেরকে দাস অথবা দাসির কাজ করতে হতো। অভিজাত বংশের ছায়া তাদের মাথার উপর ছিল না। ইসলাম আসার আগে দাস হওয়ায় ছিল এই গোত্রের মানুষদের নিয়তি। সেই নিচু গোত্র জন্ম নেয়া মেয়েটিই একদিন হয়ে উঠবে ইসলামের সবচেয়ে সাহসী নারী। ইসলামের জন্য জীবন দেয়া প্রথম মুসলমান।
সুমাইয়ার স্বামীর নাম ছিল ইয়াসির ইবনে আমির যিনি হারানো ভাইকে খুজতে ইয়েমেন থেকে মক্কায় এসেছিলেন। আবু জাহেলের চাচা আবু হুজাইফার বাড়িতে দাসি হিসেবে থাকতো সুমাইয়া। আর সেই বাড়িতে ঠাঁই হয় ইয়াসিরেও । সেখানেই তাদের বিয়ে হয় এবং একটি ছেলে সন্তান হয় আম্বার ইবনে ইয়াসির । যিনি প্রথম ইসলাম গ্রহণ করা সৌভাগ্যবান ৭ জনের একজন। পরবর্তীতে ২য় খলিফার আমরলে তিনি কুফার গভর্নর নিযুক্ত হয়েছিলেন।
আম্মার ইসলাম গ্রহণের পর তা বাড়িতে বাবা মায়ের কাছে তা ধীরে ধীরে প্রকাশ করে। ইসলামে মুসলমানদের সম্মান দেখে বাবা ইয়াসির ও মা সুমাইয়া দুজনেই আকৃষ্ট হয় ইসলামের দিকে। ইসলাম গ্রহণ করে দুজনেই। সুমাইয়া ছিলেন ইসলাম গ্রহণ করা ১৭তম ব্যক্তি।
পুরো পরিবার ইসলাম গ্রহণ করার পর সুমাইয়ার এর উপর আবু জেহেল অকথ্য অত্যাচার শুরু করেন। কারন তখনও তার পরিবারের দাস ছিল সুমাইয়া। আর দাসদাসির উপর অত্যাচার করা ছিল ইসলামপুর্ব যুগের স্বাভাবিক এক নিয়ম।
আবু জেহেল তাদের পুরোপরিবারকে মক্কার মরুভূমির বালুর মাঝে লোহার পোষাক পরিয়ে শুইয়ে রাখত। তাদের অপরাধ তারা ইসলাম গ্রহন করেছেন।
যেহেতু হযরত সুমাইয়া এর কোন নিজস্ব গোত্র ছিল না, ছিল দাসী , তাই আবু জেহেল তার ইচ্ছামত হযরত সুমাইয়াকে অত্যাচার করত।
দীর্ঘদিন অত্যাচার নির্যাতন করার পরও যখন হযরত সুমাইয়া ইসলাম ধর্ম পরিত্যাগ করলেন না, তখন একদিন নরাধম আবু জেহেল হযরত সুমাইয়া এর পেটের নিচে বর্শা নিক্ষেপ করে খুন করেন সুমাইয়াকে। শহীদ হন ইসলামের প্রথম মুসলমান। ইসলামের জন্য জীবন দেন সুমাইয়া।
ইসলাম গ্রহণ করা প্রথম মানুষটি ছিলেন একজন নারী যার নাম হযরত খাদিজা।শহীদও হলেন একজন নারী। নাম সুমাইয়া। তার আত্নত্যাগ মুসলিম জাতিকে আজও সমানভাবে অনুপ্রানিত করে। ইসলামে এই সাহসী যোদ্ধা সুমাইয়ার নামও স্বর্নাক্ষরে লেখা থাকবে।
হযরত সুমাইয়া এর মৃত্যুর পর নরাধম আবু জেহেল তার স্বামী হযরত ইয়াসীর ইবনে আমিরকেও তীরবিদ্ধ করে শহীদ করে। শহীদ হন স্বামী স্ত্রী দুজনেই। আর ইসলাম গ্রহণের অপরাধে বাবা মা দুজনকেই হারিয়ে এতিম হয়ে যান আম্বার ইবনে ইয়াসির।
হযরত সুমাইয়া যখন শহীদ হন, তখন সারা পৃথিবীতে ১০০ জনেরও বেশী মুসলমান ছিলেন না।
হযরত সুমাইয়া শাহাদাত বরণ করেন ৬১৫ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে। মহানবীর নবুওয়্যাত লাভের পাঁচ বছর পর শাহাদাত বরণ করেন ইসলামের এই মহান নারী।
