পারভেজ সেলিম।
পরথম শক্তিশালী স্বাধীন বাঙ্গালি রাজা শশাংকের মৃত্যুর পর এক বিশৃঙ্খল অবস্থার সৃষ্টি হয়েছিল পুরো বাংলায়। কোন কেন্দ্রীয় নেতৃত্ব না থাকায় চরম এক বিচারহীনতার পরিবেশ তৈরি হয়েছিল পুরো বাংলা জুড়ে। একশ বছর ধরে চলে সেই অরাজকতার যুগ। ইতিহাসে যা মাৎস্যান্যায় নামে পরিচিত ।
৬৩৮ সালে শশাংকের মৃত্যুর পর রাজা হর্ষবর্ধন বাংলার কিছু অংশ দখল করেছিল। ৬৪৭ সালে হর্ষবর্ধনের মৃত্যু হলে জয়নাগ নামে এক রাজা আরো কয়েক বছর শক্তভাবে বাংলা শাসন করেছিল বলে জানা যায়। তার মৃত্যুর পর আর বড় কোন শক্তির হাতে বাংলার ক্ষমতা থাকে না।
৬৫০ থেকে শুরু হয়ে ৭৫০ সাল প্রায় ১০০ বছরের বেশি সময় কোন কেন্দ্রীয় নেতৃত্ব ছাড়া চলে বাংলা। ‘জোর যার মুল্লুক তার’ এমন পরিস্থিতি তৈরি হয়। চরম বিশৃংখলার এই সময়টিকে ‘মাৎস্যন্যায়ের যুগ’ বা অরাজকতার যুগ বলা হয়।
সংস্কৃত শব্দ ‘মাৎস্যন্যায়ম’ মানে মাছের মতো। তখনকার সমাজে শক্তিশালী মানুষ দ্বারা নিপিড়িত হচ্ছিল ীব মানুষেরা ছিলনা কোন ন্যায় বিচার। সবকিছু হতো ক্ষমতাবানদের ইচ্ছেমাফিক।
কৌটিল্যের অর্থশাস্ত্রে ‘ মাৎস্যন্যায়’ এর ব্যাখা দেয়া হয়েছে এভাবে যে, যখন বিচারের অভাবে ক্ষমতাবানরা দুর্বলকে গ্রাস করে, মানে অনেকটা মাছের রাজত্বের মতো, যেখানে বড় মাছ ছোট মাছকে খেয়ে ফেলে।
বাংলায় প্রায় একশ বছর ব্যাপি তেমনি এক অরাজক আর বিচারহীনতার সময় এসেছিল। গোটা দেশে কোন কেন্দ্রিয় রাজা ছিল না। প্রত্যেক ক্ষত্রিয়, ব্রাক্ষ্ণণ, সম্ভান্ত লোক, কিংবা বড় ব্যবসায়ীরা নিজ নিজ এলাকা কিংবা আশেপাশে এলাকা শাসন করতে শুরু করেছিলেন নিজের ইচ্ছেমতন। গরীর আর দুর্বলরা হয়ে পড়েছিলেন চরম অসহায়। বাংলার ইতিহাসে ছিল এ এক চরম হতাশা আর নৈরাজ্যের যুগ।
মাৎস্যন্যায়ের যুগ শেষ হয় ৭৫০ সালে। পাল বংশের প্রথম রাজা গোপালের ক্ষমতায় বসার মধ্য দিয়ে এর পরিসমাপ্তি ঘটে। এরপর বাংলা প্রায় ৪০০ বছর শক্তিশালী পাল রাজাদের দ্বারা শাসিত হতে থাকে। চরম হতাশা আর অন্ধকার সময় কাটিয়ে বাংলা আবারো এক বিশাল শক্তিশালি সাম্রাজ্যে পরিনত হয়।
