পারভেজ সেলিম ।।

যে সামান্য কয়েকটি মৌলিক পদার্থ স্বত:স্ফূর্তভাবে অদৃশ্য আলো বিকিরণ করে রেডিয়াম হলো তাদের মধ্যে একটি। এ ধরনের মৌলিক পদার্থ সমূহকে তেজষ্ক্রিয় পদার্থ বলে। রেডিয়াম আবিস্কারের ফলে পৃথিবীতে এক বিশাল শক্তির দুয়ার খুলে যায়। আর তা হল পারমানবিক শক্তি। রেডিয়াম পদার্থ আবিস্কারের মধ্য দিয়ে মানুষ এই মহাশক্তিধর ক্ষমতার উৎসের সন্ধান পায়। এরপর আরো শক্তিশালী পদার্থ আবিস্কৃত হলেও  বিশেষ মহিমা নিয়ে টিকে আছে রেডিয়াম ।

 রেডিয়াম যে অদৃশ্য আলো বিকিরণ করে তাকে বলে তেজস্ক্রিয় রশ্মি। এ রশ্মি তিন প্রকার, যথা: আলফা, বেটা এবং গামা। রেডিয়াম থেকে তেজস্ক্রিয় রশ্মি বেরিয়ে আসার ফলে এ বিয়োজিত বা ভেঙ্গে গিয়ে শেষ পর্যন্ত আরেক পদার্থ সীসায় রূপ নেয়।

অন্ধকারে দেখা যায় রেডিয়াম

রেডিয়াম আবিস্কার :

১৬২২ বছর ধরে এ তেজস্ক্রিয় পদার্থটি মাত্র অর্ধেক পরিমাণ সীসায় রূপান্তরিত হয়। এ সময়কে পদার্থটির অর্ধআয়ু বলে।পরবর্তী ১৬২২ বছরে পদার্থটির বাকি অংশটি সীসায় পরিণত হয়।এ প্রক্রিয়াটি অনির্দিষ্টকাল ধরে চলতে থাকে।

 তেজস্ক্রিয় রশ্মিটি এতো শক্তিশালি যে মানবদেহ সহ অন্যান্য বিভিন্ন বস্তুর ভেতর দিয়ে অনায়াসেই সে অতিক্রম করে যেতে পারে। তাই ক্যান্সার রোগসহ আরও অন্যান্য জটিল কঠিন  নিরাময়ে এ রশ্মি খুব দরকারি।

 রেডিয়াম আবিষ্করের কৃতিত্ব হলো পিয়ারি কুরি এবং ম্যারি কুরি নামক এক দম্পতির। এ পর্দার্থটি আবিষ্কারের কাহিনী বেশ মজার। ১৮৯৬ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে হেনরি বেকারেল পদার্থের তেজক্রিয়তা আবিষ্কর করেন।

মাদাম ও পিয়েরি কুরি

তিনি দেখলেন যে, ইউরেনিয়াম এমন এক অদৃশ্য আলো বিকিরণ করে যা এক্স রশ্মি থেকেও শক্তিশালি। ১৮৯৮ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ২৬ ডিসেম্বর পিয়ারি কুরি এবং ম্যাডাম কুরি বোরিয়াম পদার্থ থেকেও অনুরুপ বিকিরন লক্ষ্য করেন।

তারা ভাবলেন ইউরেনিয়াম পাওয়া খনিজ পদার্থগুলোতে হয়তো আরো অন্য তেজস্ক্রিয় পদার্থ নিহিত আছে।তখন তারা সেই নতুন তেজস্ক্রিয় পদার্থ পাওয়ার আশায় পিচব্রেন্ডে শোধন করা শুরু করলেন।

তাদের উপার্জন ছিল সীমিত। ভালো গবেষণাগার তাদের ছিল না।তাই একটি টিনের ছাউনি ঘেরা ঘরে তাদেরকে অত্যন্ত কষ্ট করেই এ কাজ করতে হতো। ঝড়-বৃষ্টি উপেক্ষা করে তারা দির রাত গবেষণার  কাজ করে চললেন।

কয়েক টুকরা পিচব্রেন্ড শোধন করে শেষ পর্যন্ত ১০০ মিলিগ্রাম রেডিয়াম নিষ্কাশন করতে সক্ষম হলেন। তারা দেখলেন যে, এ নতুন পদার্থটি ইউরেনিয়াম থেকে অনেক বেশি শক্তিশালী। বিশুদ্ধ রেডিয়ামের রং সাদা।

 রেডিয়াম পদার্থটি ওজনে  যথেষ্ট ভারী এবং সোনার থেকে হাজার গুণ বেশি দামি। পৃথিবীতে বিশুদ্ধ রেডিয়ামের পরিমাণ খুব কম।

তেজস্ক্রিয় রশ্মি শরীরের জন্য খুব ক্ষতিকর। অসাবধানে রেডিয়াম নিয়ে কাজ করলে এর তেজস্ক্রিয় শক্তি শরীরে সহজেই ক্ষত সৃষ্টি করতে পারে। পিয়ারি কুরি এবং মাদাম কুরি এ দম্পতির অনেক সাধনার পরে রেডিয়াম আবিস্কার করে বিশ্বের চিকিৎসা ক্ষেত্রে বিশাল সাফল্য এনে দিয়েছেন।

ঘড়ি কারখানায় কাজ করছেন ‘রেডিয়াম কণ্যারা’

হতভাগ্য রেডিয়াম গার্ল :

রেডিয়াম আবিস্কারের পর তা সারা পৃথিবীতে এমন অভূতপূর্ব সাড়া  ফেলেছিল যে বহুজাতিক কোম্পানীগুলো তাদের নানান পন্যে এই রেডিয়াম ব্যবহার করতে থাকে বিশেষ করে ঘড়িতে । অন্ধকারে দেখা যায় বলে সেই পণ্য হুহু করে বিক্রি হতে থাকে। ফলে কোম্পানীর মালিকদের লাভ হতে থাকে আর ভয়াবহ ক্ষতি হতে থাকে শ্রমিকদের । পন্য উৎপাদনে যে নারীরা কাজ করতো তারা তেজস্ক্রিয়তার ফলে ধীরে ধীরে অসুস্থ হয়ে মারা যেতে থাকেন। তাদের মৃত্যুর কারন প্রচার করা হত ‘সিফিলিস’। এসকল নারীদের মৃতদেহের কফিন থেকে এখনও রেডিয়ামের আলো বের হয় । পরবর্তীতে ব্যাপক আন্দোলনের পরে আইন করে রেডিয়ামের যথেচ্ছা ব্যবহার বন্ধ করা হয় । জীবন দেয়া সেই সকল হতভাগ্য নারী কর্মীরা ইতিহাসে ‘রেডিয়াম গার্ল’ নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে ।

পরবর্তীতে রেডিয়ামের সঠিক এবং নিয়ন্ত্রিত ব্যবহার শুরু হয় । জটিল ব্যাধিতে আক্রান্ত রোগিদের রেডিয়াম দিয়ে পরীক্ষা নিরীক্ষার মাধ্যমে সহজেই রোগব্যাধি নির্ণয় করা সম্ভব হচ্ছে। ফলে চিকিৎসার মাধ্যমে মানুষ  সহজেই আরোগ্য লাভ করতে পারছে। রেডিয়াম আবিস্কারের ফলে মানবজাতি কয়েকধাপ এগিয়ে গেছে যেমন তেমনি তার সঠিক ব্যবহার করতে না পারায় তার খেসারতও মানবজাতিকে দিতে হয়েছে ।
