১৯৯৬ সালের ৬ সেপ্টেম্বর দেশের সেই সময়ের শ্রেষ্ঠ নায়ক পৃথিবী ছেড়ে চলে যান। তার লাশ বাসার ড্রযিং রুমে ফ্যানের সাথে ঝুলন্ত অবস্থায় পাওয়া যায় । কেউ বলে আত্নহত্যা কেউ বলে হত্যা ।
প্রথমে থানায় একটি অপমৃত্যুর মামলা হলেও ১৯৯৭ সালে ২৪ জুলাই বাবা কমরউদ্দীন এটিকে হত্যা মামলায় পরির্বতন করার আবেদন করেন। ২০০২ এ তিনি মারা যাবার পর মা নীল চৌধুরী একাই লড়ে যাচ্ছেন এই মামলা। তার দাবি তার ছেলেকে হত্যা করা হয়েছে। আর স্ত্রী সামিরা এই হত্যাকান্ডের সাথে জড়িত । গত ২৪ বছর ধরে তিনি একাই ছেলে হত্যার বিচার চেয়ে যাচ্ছেন ।
সরকারি তদন্ত সংস্থা থেকে চারবার চুড়ান্ত প্রতিবেদন দেয়া হয়েছে এই মামলার । থানা পুলিশ, গোয়েন্দা পুলিশ, সিআইডি, র্যাব এরপর বিচার বিভাগীয় তদন্ত কমিটি তদন্ত চালায় ১২ বছর । সবার তদন্ত প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয় সালমান শাহ আত্নহত্যা করেছেন । কিন্ত পরিবারের না রাজির কারনে এই মামলা ২০১৭ সালে পুনরায় তদন্তের জন্য দেয়া হয় পুলিশ বুর্যো অফ ইনভেস্টিগেশন বা পিবি্আইকে ।
সেই তদন্ত শেষ ২০২০সালে ফেব্রুয়ারি মাসে। এই মাসের ২৪ তারিখ এক সংবাদসম্মেলন করে পিবিআই জানান সালমান হত্যা নয় আত্নহত্যা করেছেন। এ জন্য তারা প্রধানত পাঁচটি কারন চিহ্নিত করেন ।
১. এক নায়িকার সাথে অন্তরঙ্গতা ২. দাম্পত্য কলহ ৩. অতিরিক্ত আবেগ প্রবনতা ৪. মায়ের প্রতি অভিমান
৫. সন্তান না হওয়ার অপূর্নতা ।
যদিও নায়িকা শাবনুর ও সালমান শাহ মা এই তদন্ত প্রতিবেদনকে প্রত্যাখান করেছে।

পিবিআই ৬০০ পৃষ্টার প্রতিবেদন তুলে ধরে অআত্নহত্যার পূর্নাঙ্গ বিবরন ।
পিবিআই এর ভাষ্যমতে ৫ সেপ্টেম্বর সালমান-শাবনুরের প্রেম পিয়াসী সিনেমার ডাবিং ছিল। সেখানে সামিরা গিয়ে তাদের ঘনিষ্ঠ অবস্থায় দেখতে পায় । এ নিয়ে বাসায় সারারাত দ্বন্দ্ব চলে স্বামী স্ত্রীর । এসময় সালমানে মোবাইলে শাবনুরের ফোন আসে তিনবার। শেষে ফোনটি আঁছাড় দিয়ে ভেঙ্গে ফেলে সালমান।
পরের দিন সকালে সালমানের বাবা বাসায় আসলে সামিরা তাকে নাস্তা খাওয়ায়।কিন্তু সালমানের সাথে দেখা করতে পারেন না।
সকালে সালমান ঘুম থেকে উঠে পানি খায়, কাজের লোকদের সাথে কথা বলে। বেড রুমে এসে সামিরার দিকে অনেকক্ষন তাকিয়ে থেকে ফিরে গিয়ে ড্রেসিং রুমের দরজা লাগিয়ে দেয় সালমান।
এর কিছুক্ষন পর ড্রয়িং রুমের দরজা খুলছেনা দেখে সামিরাকে ডাকে কাজের মেয়ে ডলি। পরে চাবি দিয়ে দরজা খুললৈ দেখা যায় সালমান শাহ ফ্যানের সাথে ঝুলে আছে। সময়টা সকাল ১১.৩০। এরপরে তাকে নামিয়ে ধরাধরি করে পাশের বেডরুমে নিয়ে যায় সবাই।
পরে দ্রুত প্রথমে হলি ফ্যামিলি হাসপাতালে পরে ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে নিয়ে গেলে ডাক্তার তাকে মৃত ঘোষনা করে। তারিখটা ৬ সেপ্টেম্বর,১৯৯৬। শেষ হয় বাংলা সিনেমার এক শ্রেষ্ঠ নায়কের জীবনের অধ্যায়।
