পারভেজ সেলিম
১৩৪৭ সালের অক্টোবর মাস। ইউরোপের সিসিলি বন্দরে এসে পৌঁছল বারোটি জাহাজ । কিন্তু জাহাজ থেকে নেমে এলো না কোন মানুষ। বন্দরের লোকজন জাহাজের ভিতরে গিয়ে দেখতে পেল এক ভয়ংকর এক দৃশ্য , যা তারা কল্পনাও করতে পারেনি। জাহাজের ভিতরে পড়ে আছে শুধু লাশ আর লাশ। যে দু একজন মানুষ বেঁচে আছে তারও মৃত্যুর সাথে পাঞ্জা লড়ছে। সমস্ত শরীরে ঘা আর পুঁজ । দুর্গন্ধে ভারী হয়ে গেছে আশেপাশের বাতাস। ভয়ংকর এক সংক্রামক রোগে আক্রান্ত হয়েছে সবাই । সেই অজানা রোগের নাম ‘প্লেগ’।
সেখান থেকে শুরু তারপর এই মৃত্যু আর লাশের মিছিল ছড়িয়ে পড়ে গোটা ইউরোপে। ভয়াবহ এক মহামারি দেখা দেয় পৃথিবীতে । যাতে মারা যায় ২০ কোটি মানুষ । মাত্র চার বছরে পুরো ইউরোপের অর্ধেক মানুষ উজাড় হয়ে যায় । পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে বড় এই মহামারির নাম ‘ব্লাক ডেথ’ বা ‘কালো মড়ক’।
‘ব্লাক ডেথ’ জীবানুর উৎস :
ইটালীর সিসিলি বন্দরে আসা জাহাজগুলো ভর্তি ছিল প্লেগের জীবানুবাহী ইঁদুর আর মানুষে । জাহাজ গুলো এসেছিল ক্রেমিয়া থেকে । কিন্তু কোথা থেকে তাদের শরীরে এই প্লেগ এসেছিল তা কেউই জানেনা। কারো মতে প্লেগ প্রথম দেখা দিয়েছিল মোঙ্গলিয়ায় । ১৩৩৮-১৩৩৯ সালের সেখানকার কবরগুলোতে মহামারির কথা উল্লেখ আছে। এরপর মোঙ্গলিয়া থেকে চীন এবং তারপর ইউরোপ ।
অবশ্য আধুনিক কিছু চিকিৎসা বিজ্ঞানী দাবি করছেন এই প্লেগ শুরু হয়েছিল চীন থেকেই। ১৩৩০ এর দশকে মোঙ্গলরা যখন চীন দখল করে তখন চাষাবাদ ব্যাপক হ্রাস পায় । সাথে প্রাকৃতিক দূর্যোগ আর অনাবৃষ্টি মিলে ১৩৩১ এ ভয়াবহ দূর্ভিক্ষ দেখা দেয় । আর এর পরপরই দেখা দেয় প্লেগ।ইউরোপে পৌঁছানোর আগে প্রায় ২.৫ কোটি চীনা মারা যায় এই রোগে ।

প্লেগের ইতিহাস :
শুধু ‘ব্লাক ডেথ’ নয় এর আগেও দেখা গেছে এই প্লেগের মহামারি । ইতিহাসে প্রথম প্লেগের খবর পাওয়া যায় এথেন্সে। খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব ৪২৯ এ। এই মহামারি ‘এথেন্স প্লেগ’ নামে পরিচিত। ১ লাখ মানুষ মারা পড়েছিল সেই সময়।
এরপর প্লেগের বিশাল এক মহামারি দেখা দেয় মিশরে। খ্রিষ্টাব্দ ৫৪০ থেকে ৫৪১ সালে। রোমান সম্রাট জাস্টিয়ানেরও এই রোগ দেখা দেয়। ব্যাপক চিকিৎসার ফলে যদিও ভালো হয়ে যান সম্রাট তবু তার নামে এই মহামারি ‘জাস্টিয়ান প্লেগ’ নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে। প্রতিদিন গড়ে ৫ হাজার মানুষ মারা যেত সেই সময়। সব মিলিয়ে ৩-৫ কোটি মানুষ মারা যায় এই মহামারিতে । এটি প্লেগের প্রথম মহামারি হিসেবেও পরিচিত ।
এরপরের ভয়াবহ মহামারির নাম ‘ব্লাক ডেথ’ বা কালো মৃত্যু যার কথা প্রথমই আপনাদের শুনিযেছি। মানবজাতির ইতিহাসে এটিই সবচেয় বড় মহামারি। ২০ কোটি মানুষ মারা গিয়েছিল। ইউরোপ আর এশিয়া পরিনত হয়েছিল মৃত্যুপুরিতে। মাত্র চার বছরে এত মানুষ এর আগে কখনোই মারা যায়নি। এটাই পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে ভয়াবহ মহামারি। দ্বিতীয় মহামারি নামেও এটি পরিচিত ‘ব্লাক ডেথ’।
সারা পৃথিবীর প্লেগ ছড়ায় মুলত দুটি পথে। বনিকদের জাহাজের মাধ্যমে ও সে সময়ের বিখ্যাত সিল্ক রোড দিয়ে। বনিকদের জাহাজে যেসব কালো ইঁদুর থাকতো তাদের রক্তে ছিল ‘ইরসিন পেস্টিস’ নামের ব্যাকটেরিয়া। এই ব্যকটেরিয়াই মুলত প্লেগ রোগের জন্য দায়ী। জীবানুবাহী ইঁদুরের কামড়ে মানুষের শরীরে ছড়ায় এই প্রাণঘাতি রোগ ‘প্লেগ’।

প্লেগ যত প্রকার :
এখন পর্যন্ত তিন ধরনের প্লেগ দেখা গিয়েছে । বিউবোনিক, সেপটিসিমেক ও নিউমোনিক প্লেগ। আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির কবজি বা বগলে কালো রঙ্গের ফোঁড়া ওঠে যা পরে সারা শরীরে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। এসসময় ফোঁড়া পচে পুঁজ বের হতে থাকে। ৩-৭ দিনের মাথায় মৃত্যু হয় আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির।
প্লেগে যত মানুষ মারা গেছে :
ব্লাক ডেথ মহামারির পর কয়েক শতাব্দি ধরে দেখা গেছে প্লেগের মহামারি। প্লেগে সবমিলিয়ে কত কোটি মানুষ মারা গেছে যার সঠিক হিসেব বের করা অসম্ভব।
১৭২০ এই ফ্রান্সে ১ লাখ মানুষ মারা পড়ে বিউবোনিক প্লেগে। এরপর কোয়ারেন্টাইন নামক শব্দের সাথে পরিচিত হতে থাকে মানুষ।তখন যে কোন জাহাজ বন্দরে ভিড়তে নিতে হত কতৃপক্ষের অনুমতি। দেখা হত জাহাজগুলোতে কোন রোগের অস্তিত্ব আছে কিনা । না থাকলে তবেই পাওয়া যেত ছাড়পত্র।
পরের শতাব্দিতে ১৮৫৫ সালে আবার দেখা দেয় প্লেগ। এবার চীন ও ভারতে। মারা যায় ১কোটি ২০ লাখ , যার মধ্যে শুধু ভারতে ১ কোটি মারা যায় । হংকং হয়ে ভারতে প্রবেশ করে প্লেগ । একই সময়ে কলেরা আর প্লেগে পুরো ভারত হয়ে ওঠে মৃতুপুরি । রাস্তায় রাস্তায় পড়ে থাকে মানুষের মৃতদেহ। সে এক বিভিষিকাময় সময়। কুষ্ঠ হলে তাকে আর কেউ ছুঁয়ে দেখতো না, এমনকি মৃত্যু হলে তাকে দাফন কিংবা সৎকারেও এগিয়ে আসতো না কেউই । যেমন এখন দেখা যাচ্ছে করোনার ক্ষেত্রে। তবুও একসময় শেষ হয় এই মহামারি ।
প্লেগের টিকা :
১৮৯৭ সালে ১০ জানুয়ারি ইউক্রেনের চিকিৎসা বিজ্ঞানী ওয়াল্ডেমার হফকিনস নিজের শরীরে প্লেগের ভ্যাকসিনের পরীক্ষা চালান। যিনি এর আগে কলেরার প্রতিষেধক তৈরী করে হৈ চৈ ফেলে দিয়েছিলেন। সেই ওয়াল্ডেমারের কাছেই পৃথিবী দেখতে পায় নতুন আলো। কয়েক হাজার বছরের মহামারির পরিসমাপ্তি হয়। তৈরি হয় প্রতিশেধক। কলেরা টিকা প্রথম ব্যপক শুরু হয় কলকাতায় আর প্লেগের টিকা ব্যবহার শুরু হয় বোম্বেতে। দুটোই ব্রিটিশ ভারতে ।
যদিও এরপরও আরো দীর্ঘসময় লেগেছিল মানুষের এই প্লেগ কে পুরোপুরি নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে। বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থার মতে, প্লেগের মহামারি ছিল ১৯৫৯ সাল পর্যন্ত। এরপর রোগটিকে পুরোপুরি নিয়ন্ত্রণ করা সম্ভব হয় । যদিও ১৯৯৪ সালেও ভারতে এই রোগটি দেখা গেছে তবু আর কখনো মহামারি আকার ধারণ করতে পারেনি প্লেগ।
কয়েক হাজার বছর সময় লেগেছে মানুষের এই রোগকে নিয়ন্ত্রন করতে। তবু মানুষ পরাজিত হয়নি। শেষ পর্যন্ত জিতেছে মানুষ । পরাজিত হয়েছে ভয়াবহ মরণঘাতি রোগ ‘প্লেগ’ ।
