পারভেজ সেলিম ।।
দেশভাগ। একজন বৃদ্ধ। রুকু নামের মেয়েটি। তিনটি যুবক। একটি করবী গাছ এবং একটি শীতের রাত।
বাংলা ভাষার শ্ষ্ঠ একটি গল্পের কথা বলছি। বয়স তখন সবে সাতাশ। বাস্তব ঘটনা দেখে বেদনায় ভারক্রান্ত মন। না লিখে নিজেকে স্থির রাখতে পারছেন না যুবকটি।
খুলনার ফুলতলায় অদলবদল করা একটি বাড়ি পেয়েছে দেশভাগের পর। সেখানে বসে মাত্র দুইদিনে গল্পটি লিখে ফেললেন তিনি। সাল ১৯৬৬। প্রকাশ হলো পরের বছর। তারপর ইতিহাস।
‘আত্নজা ও একটি করবী গাছ’ বাংলায় লেখা শ্রেষ্ঠ গল্পের ছোট্ট তালিকায় ঢুকে গেল। লেখক হাসান আজিজুল হক হয়ে উঠলেন বাংলা ভাষার প্রধান কথাসাহিত্যিক।
কি এমন আছে প্রায় তিন হাজার শব্দের একটি গল্পে। কেন বাংলা সাহিত্যে সুপার ডুপার হিট হয়ে উঠল গল্পটি ।
শুরুটা এমন..!
‘এখন নির্দয় শীতকাল, ঠান্ডা নামছে হিম, চাঁদ ফুটে আছে গাছের মাথায়। অল্প বাতাসে একটা বড় কলার পাতা একবার বুক দেখায় একবার পিঠ দেখায়”।
‘নির্দয় শীতকাল’ শুরুতেই এমন শব্দযু পাঠককে বেশ আকৃষ্ট করে।
শীতের রাতের অসামান্য এক বর্ণনারপর দেখব, একটা শিয়াল মুরগী মুখে নিয়ে ভাগছে আর কিছু লোক তার পিছু নিয়ে চিৎকার করতে করতে বলছে ‘কোন দিকে গেল শালার শিয়েল’।
এরপর আমরা গল্পের প্রথম চরিত্রের দেখা পাবো বড় পুলের উপর, যার নাম ইনাম।
সে পুল থেকে নেমে বিলের কিনারায় দাঁড়ায় দেখবে আরও দুজন আসছে। ফেকু ও সুহাস। তারা ত্রস্ত পায়ে ‘শঙ্খচূড়ের মতন দেখায় যে ধবল পথ’ তার মধ্য দিয়ে আসছে।
তারা গল্প করছে। কিন্তু কেন এত রাতে তারা এখানে তা কেউ বলছে না। সুহাস গল্প করছে তার মামার বিয়ে নিয়ে, ফেকুর বগলে বাজছে একটা ট্রানজিষ্টার। কনিকার গান বাজছে কিন্তু কেউ শুনছে না। কোনও দিকে পাখিও ডাকছে না।
শীতে রাতের আবারো এক ঘন বর্ণনা শেষে আমরা বুঝতে পারি এই তিনজন একসাথে কোথাও যাচ্ছে। যেখানে যেতে দেরি হলে ঘুমিয়ে পড়তে পারে কোন এক বুড়ো।
কেন তারা সেখানে যাচ্ছে তা স্পষ্ট নয়। আর কে এই বুড়ো?
এরপর লেখক চরিত্র তিনটিকে পরিচয় করাতে থাকেন। ইনাম একসময় লেখাপড়া করতো, সুহাস নাপিত ও ফেকু পকেটমার, যে অনেক মার খেয়েছে জীবনে। গল্পের শুরুতে চাঁদমনির বাড়ির যে মুরগীটিকে শিয়াল নিয়ে পালিয়েছিল তারও কিছু বয়ান দেখতে পাই সাথে।
‘পথায় অন্ধকার থকথক করছে’ রাতের এক অভিনব চিত্রায়নের সাথে চরিত্র তিনটির জীবনের গল্প শুনতে থাকি আমরা। তিনজনের জীবনেই ব্যর্থতায় ভরা। তিনজনই বেকার ও হতাশাগ্রস্থ।
এরপরেই চরিত্র তিনটির দ্বিধা সংকোচ আর শঙ্কা দেখতে পায় পাঠক। সুহাস বলে ‘বুড়োটারে দেখলে আমার ভয় করে, একবার মন হয় মরে যাবানে এহুনি, একবার মনে হয় আমাদের সব কডারে খুন করবেনে।’
গল্পের ডালপালারা হঠাৎ ঝাপটাতে শুরু করে। আমরা জানতে পারি বুড়ো নয় বুড়োর মেয়ের জন্য এই তিনজন এই রাতে বের হয়েছে। ‘এট্টু এট্টু সর হইছে এমন ডাবের মত লাগে মেয়েডারে’।
আরো অনেক পথ পেরিয়ে তারা এগুতে থাকে। যেতে যেতে জানা যায় ইনামের কাছে টাকা নাই, কেউ তাকে ধার দিতেও রাজি নয় না। ভাই এর পকেট থেকে দু টাকা চুরি করে এনেছে একজন। ইনামের টাকার সংস্থান না করেই কাঙ্খিত বাড়িটির সামনে চলে আসে তারা।
বাড়ির বুড়ো বের হয়ে আসে ‘সমস্ত উঠোনটায় বিরাট ছায়া, খাটো লুঙ্গির নিচে শুকনো দুটো পা। গেটের পাশে করবী গাছটার কাছে এসে দাঁড়ায়’।
বুড়ো তিনজনকে ভিতরে নিয়ে যায়। বাড়ির ভিতরে চৌকিতে গিয়ে বসে তারা।
আমরা এবার নিশ্চিত হই বুড়ো ওপারের লোক। সাতচল্লিশের পর এদেশে এসে অসংখ্য পরিবারের মতো ভয়াবহ পরিস্থিতির মুখোমুখি দাঁড়িেছে। দেশভাগের পরের সময়কাল ও জীবনের চরম এক নিষ্ঠুরতার গল্প এটি।
বুড়োর হাতে টাকা গুজে দিয়ে ফেকু ও সুহাস যায় পাশের ঘরে ছোট মেয়েটির কাছে, ইনাম বসে থাকে। বুড়ো নিজেই আগায় দেয় ‘যাও তোমরা, কথা বলে এসো, উই পাশের ঘরে’।
ঘর থেকে বৃদ্ধার কথা শোনা গেলে বুড়ো চিৎকার করে ,চুপ, চুপ, মাগি চুপ কর, কুত্তী —এবং সমস্ত চুপ করে যায়’
ইনাম বুড়োর সাথে বসে থাকে। ‘এলোমেলো শাড়ির শব্দ আর ইনামের অনুভবে ফুটে উঠল নিটোল সোনারঙের দেহ’।
বুড়োর গল্প চলতে থাকে।
‘এখানে যখন এলাম—আমি প্রথম একটা করবী গাছ লাগাই …..ফুলের জন্যে নয়, বুড়ো বলল, বিচির জন্যে, বুঝেছ, করবী ফুলের বিচির জন্যে। চমৎকার বিষ হয় করবী ফুলের বিচিতে’।
বলতে বলতে হু হু ফোঁপানী দিয়ে কান্না আসে বুড়োর। ইনাম তাচ্ছিলে উড়িয়ে দেয় বুড়োর কান্না, ‘এ্যাহন তুমি কাঁদতিছ? এ্যাহন তুমি কাঁদতিছ? এ্যাহন কাঁদতিছ তুমি?
গল্প শেষ হয় এখানে।
এবং তারপর :
আমি বসে থাকি। ভাবি। কি হল ? কেন এমন হলো ? এমন কি সত্যি হয়। বুঝতে বেশ সময় লাগে।
গল্প বলতে তেমন কিছু নাই। ক্ষয়ে যাওয়া সমাজের তিন বখাটে যুবকের হাতে এক বৃদ্ধ অসহায় বাবা তার অল্ বয়সী মেয়েকে তুলে দিচ্ছে প্রতি রাতে। দেশভাগের এমন এক নৃশংস বাস্তবতা পাঠকের বুকে এসে বাঁধে।পাঠক নিজের কাধে এর দায় অনুভব করে।
এমন জঘন্য অপরাধের জন্য কি নিজেকে দোষ দেয় বুড়ো? সে কি করবীর বিষ খেয়ে আত্নহত্যার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছে ! বিষের গাছ লাগিয়েছে কি পুরো পরিবারকে নিয়ে এই নষ্ট, অসহায় জীবনের পরিসমাপ্তি টানবে বলে? অথবা নিজেকে শুধুই হয়ত প্রবোধ দেয় বুড়ো, শান্তি পায় এই ভেবে যে, এই হীন জীবন সে একদিন শেষ করে দেবে !
কিন্তু পাঠক হিসেবে আমার মনকে বিষিয়ে তোলে, এমন জীবন কেন হলো এই বৃদ্ধর ও তার পরিবারের। দেশটা কি তার ইচ্ছায় ভাগ হয়েছিল? তাহলে তার এমন নির্মম ফল কেন তাকে ভোগ করতে হচ্ছে ? শুধু কয়েকজন নষ্ট মানুষের রাজনৈতিক সিদ্ধান্তে ছিন্ন ভিন্ন হয়েছে এপার- ওপার বাংলার এমন কতশত পরিবারের জীবন! কেন এমন হয়েছে ? এর কোন উত্তর নাই। শুধুই নিজেকে সামর্থহীন মনে হয়।
যারা সহজ ভাষা পড়ে অভ্যস্থ তাদের প্রথমে একটু দুর্বোধ্য মনে হতে পারে। কথ্য ভাষা গুলো বুঝতে আপনি গুলিয়ে যেতে পারেন অনেককিছু।
কয়েকবার পড়ার পর বোঝা যায় মাত্র কয়েকটি শব্দে কত গল্প কি অবলিলায়, নির্মোহ ভাবে বলে গেছেন লেখক। যতবার পড়বেন তত পরিষ্কার আর স্পষ্ট হয়ে বে গল্পটির সৌন্দর্য্য।
কারো পক্ষ নিচ্ছেন না লেখক, কোথাও কোন আবেগ নাই, গল্পের আত্নজাকে শুধু একবার দেখতে পাই যার নাম রুকু। যেন কিছুই বললেন না লেখক, অথচ বলে গেলেন বাঙ্গালী জাতির আজন্ম এক বেদনার কথা, দেশভাগ।
গল্প শেষ হতেই চারিদিক থেকে ছুটে আসতে থাকে নানান দৃশ্য। দেশভাগের অসারতা, নৃশংসতা, ধ্বংসলীলা একসাথে আপনার মগজে এসে চাপ দেয়। মানুষের পরাজয়ের করুণ এক চিত্র স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে।ব্যর্থ দেশভাগের দায় নিজের মনে হয়। বুড়োর মতো পাঠকও হুহু করে কাঁদতে থাকে। পাশ থেকে ইনামের মত হয়ত কেউ টিটকারি করে ‘এ্যাহন তুমি কাঁদতিছ? এ্যাহন কাঁদতিছ তুমি?
যুগের পর যুগ যারা এ গল্প পড়বেন, তারাই হয়ত কাঁদবেন শব্দে অথবা নিঃশব্দে।
আর সাহিত্যে একেই হয়ত বলে ‘কালজয়ী’।
