পঞ্চাশ বছরের এক আমেরিকান যুবক। বর্তমান বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে ধনী ব্যক্তি। ধনী হয়ত অনেকে আছেন, কিন্তু তিনি সকলের চেয়ে আলাদা। বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে ‘খ্যাপাটে জিনিয়াস’ হিসেবে ধরা হয় তাকে, যিনি ছুটছেন বিচিত্র সব সৃষ্টির পিছনে, আর টাকা ছুটছে তার পিছনে।
কেউ কেউ মনে করেন তিনি ভিন গ্রহ থেকে এসে পৃথিবীতে আটকা পড়া এক বুদ্ধিমান প্রাণী।
যিনি বিশাল বিশাল আইডিয়াকে বাস্তবে রুপ দিয়ে মানুষের সামর্থের সীমানাকে অসীম করে তুলছেন।
নিজের শ্রেষ্ঠ ধনী হবার ভবিষ্যৎ বাণী যিনি নিজেই করেছিলেন, আর সেটি প্রমানিত হয়েছিল নির্ধারিত সময়ের এক বছর আগে।
এই মানুষটির নাম ইলন মাস্ক।
মানুষের স্বপ্নকে বাস্তবে রুপ দিতে সিদ্ধহস্ত তিনি। সবাই যাকে ভাবে অসম্ভব, ইলন করে দেখাচ্ছেন আর প্রমাণ করছেন মানুষ পক্ষে অনেক কিছুই সম্ভব।
মানুষের সৃষ্টির সেরা জীব হিসেবে গর্ব করার কারণ জোরেশোরে মনে করিয়ে দিচ্ছেন ইলন মাস্ক নামের এই জিনিয়াস মানুষটি।
কি আছে তার ?
২০২২ সালের এপ্রিলে ইলন মাস্কের মোট সম্পদের পরিমান ছিল ২৫ লক্ষ কোটি টাকার বেশি।
বাংলাদেশের বার্ষিক বাজেটের প্রায় ৫ গুন। মানে পুরো বাংলাদেশ শুধু ইলনের টাকা দিয়ে পাঁচ বছর অনায়াসে চলতে পারবে। প্রতি মিনিটে তার সেই সম্পদের পরিমান বাড়ছে।
কিন্তু শুধু টাকার অংক দিয়ে বিচার করলে কি আর ইলনকে সঠিক বিচার করা যাবে ? যাবে না। কারণ এমন টাকার মালিক অনেকে আছেন কিন্তু প্রযুক্তি দিয়ে মানুষের ভবিষ্যৎকে বদলে দেবার এমন বিশাল বিশাল চিন্তার বাস্তবায়ন আর কাউকে করতে দেখা যায়নি।
তার চিন্তার বিশালতা দেখলেই মানুষ হিসেবে যেকারো মন ভরে উঠবে। কারো কারো অবশ্য বিশ্বাস করতে কষ্ট হবে। অনেকে তার কর্মকে গোজামিল ভেবে অবিশ্বাসও করবেন। তা করুক।
তার প্রতিষ্ঠান আছে ছয়টি। তেল ছাড়া গাড়ী নির্মাণ প্রতিষ্ঠান ‘টেসলা ইনকোর্পোরেশন’ দিয়ে তিনি নিজের একক যাত্রা শুরু করেছিলেন ২০০৩ সালে। একে একে স্পেস এক্স, সোলার সিটি, নিওরোলিংক, হাইপারলুপ, বোরিং কোম্পানী প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন, যেন একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান আরেকটি প্রতিষ্ঠান থেকে বেশি সম্ভাবনাময়। প্রতিটি যেন মানব কল্যাণের চুড়ান্ত অগ্রগতির প্রকাশ।
এছাড়াও তিনি বিনিয়োগ করে রেখেছেন ভিন্ন ভিন্ন কোম্পানীতে।
২০২১ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারিতে ক্রিপ্টোকারেন্সি বিটকয়েক কিনেছেন ১.৫ বিলিয়ন ডলারের। এর পরই বিটকয়েনের দাম আকাশচুম্বি হয়ে যায়। যা এখনও চলমান।
টুইটারের মালিক এখন ইলন :
সম্প্রতি তিনি সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম টুইটারের শেয়ার কিনে হইচই ফেলে দিয়েছেন। শেয়ার কেনার সপ্তাহ খানিকের মধ্যেই পুরো টুইটার কেনার প্রস্তাব দেন তিনি। এই নিয়ে ব্যাপক শোরগোল শুরু হয়।
টুইটারের পরিচালনা পর্যদ নুতন আইন করে, একক কোন ব্যক্তি ১৫ শতাংশের চেয়ে বেশি শেয়ার কিনতে না পারার শর্ত জুড়ে দেয়। তবু শেষ রক্ষা হয়না।
এপ্রিলের ২৬ তারিখের খবর সে সিদ্ধান্ত থেকে সরে এসেছে তারা। এখন পুরো টুইটার কিনে নিচ্ছেন ইলন মাস্ক। ৩ লাখ ৭৯ হাজার কোটি টাকায় (৪৪০০ কোটি ডলার) কিনছেন এই সামাজিক মাধ্যমটিকে। এটি কিনতে ব্যক্তিগত টাকা খরচ করবেন তিনি, টেসলা কোম্পানীকে ব্যবহার করবেন না।
এরপর আরো ব্যাপক জল্পনা কল্পনা শুরু হয়ে গেছে। বাকস্বাধীনতায় কি বিরাট পরিবর্তন আসতে যাচ্ছে পৃথিবীতে? কারণ ইলন বিশ্বাস করেন সবচেয়ে বাজে সমালোচনাটা প্রকাশ করার অধিকার মানুষের থাকা উচিত। এটাই আসল বাকস্বাধীনতা। বাকস্বাধীনতা আর মিথ্যে তথ্য ছড়ানোর মধ্যে ভারসাম্য কিভাবে রক্ষা করবেন বর্তমান বিশ্বের বিশাল ক্ষমতাধর ব্যক্তিটি সেটি এখন দেখার বিষয়।
তবে তার নতুন নতুন চ্যালেঞ্জ নেবার অভ্যসটা ছিল ছোটবেলা থেকেই।
শুরুটা কিভাবে করলেন ?
একসময় মাত্র একটি কম্পিউটার ভাগাভাগি করে ব্যবহার করতেন দুইভাই। ১২ বছর বয়সে সেটি দিয়েই বানিয়ে ফেলেন কম্পিউটার গেম, নাম দেন ‘ব্লাস্টার্স’। পরে সেটি বিক্রি করে আয় করেন ৫০০ ডলার।
তারপর পড়াশুনা শেষ করে পিএইচডির জন্য ভর্তি হন মাস্ক। কিন্তু দুই দিনের মধ্যে তা বাদ দিয়ে ‘জিপ-২’ নামের একটি অনলাইন কোম্পানী প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। ১৯৯৯ সালে কম্পপেক কম্পিউটারের কাছে ৩০৭ মিলিয়ন ডলারে বিক্রি করেন জিপ-২।
এরপর কাজ শুরু করেন অনলাইন পেমেন্টের নির্ভরযোগ্য প্রতিষ্ঠান ‘পেপাল’ নিয়ে, সেটাও ২০০১ সালে। এক বছর পরেই ই-বে কোম্পানীর কাছে পেপালের শেয়ার বিক্রি করে ১৬৫ মিলিয়ন ডলার আয় করেন ইলন। আর তারপরেই শুরু করেন স্বপ্নের কোম্পানী ‘টেসলা’।
কিন্তু টেসলার সফলতার জন্য তাকে ১৭ বছর অপেক্ষা করতে হয়। এরপর একে একে ছয়টি কোম্পানী। এই সংখ্যা দিনে দিনে বাড়ছে। ইলন ভবিষ্যৎবানী করেছিলেন তিনি দুহাজার একুশ সালে সবচেয়ে বেশি অর্থের মালিক হবেন, হয়েছেনও তাই তবে এক বছর আগে ২০২০ সালে। এখন তো সম্পদের দিক থেকে তার ধারের কাছে কেউ নেই।
টেসলা: গাড়ির ভবিষ্যৎ
‘টেসলা’ হচ্ছে একটি ইলেকট্রিক বা ব্যাটারি চালিত পরিবেশ বান্ধব গাড়ি। বলা হচ্ছে মানুষের ভবিষ্যতের বাহন। তেলের গাড়ী যেমন গত কয়েক দশক ধরে পৃথিবী শাসন করছে, আগামী কয়েক দশক জীবাশ্ব জ্বালানী বিহীন গাড়ী রাজত্ব করবে বলে ধারণা করছেন প্রযুক্তিবিদরা। যা ইতিমধ্যে শুরু হয়ে গেছে।
বর্তমানে টেসলাই তার সবচেয়ে প্রভাবশালী প্রতিষ্ঠান। তবে বাকি কোম্পানীগুলো যেভাবে প্রভাব বিস্তার করতে শুরু করছে তাতে ইলন কিভাবে পৃথিবীকে বদলে দেবে তা দেখতে বেশিদিন অপেক্ষা করতে হবেনা। আর তার সম্পদের পরিমান কোথায় গিয়ে ঠেকবে তা কে জানে !
২০০৩ সালে শুরু করলেও টেসলা প্রথম গাড়িটি বাজারে আনে ২০০৮ সালে। নাম ‘রোডমাস্টার’। এটি ছিল লাল রং এর একটি স্পোর্টস কার। প্রথমে ইলন বাজারে আনতে চেয়েছিলেন বিশেষ ধরণের গাড়ি, প্রয়োজনীয় গাড়ি আনতে চেয়েছিলেন সবার পরে। সিদ্ধান্ত পবিবর্তন করে ‘রোডমাস্টারের’ পরেই তিনি প্রাইভেট কার বাজারে নিয়ে আসেন। ধীরে ধীরে তা হইচই ফেলতে শুরু করে।
টেসলার ২০ শতাংশ শেয়ারের মালিক মাস্ক নিজেই। ২০২১ সালে দশ লক্ষের বেশি গাড়ি বিক্রি হয়েছে টেসলার। আর এর চাহিদা এত বেশি যে অগ্রিম বুকিং দিয়ে কয়েক মাস অপেক্ষা করতে হয় একেকটি গাড়ির জন্য।
এখন এক ট্রিলিয়ন ডলারের কোম্পানী টেসলা। অ্যাপল ছাড়া পৃথিবীতে আর কোন কোম্পানী নাই যার এত টাকা আছে। এ ছাড়া টেসলা ৫০০ বিলিয়ন ডলারের প্রথম কোম্পানী হবে বলে ভবিষ্যৎবানী করেছেন ইলন। তার ভবিষ্যৎবানী অবশ্য মিথ্যে হয়না।
কেন অন্য সবার থেকে আলাদা ?
১২ বছর বয়সে নিজেই প্রোগ্রামিং ও কোডিং শিখে ‘ব্লাস্টার্স’ নামের একটি ভিডিও গেম তৈরি করেছিলেন। যার বিষয় স্পেস বা মহাশুন্য। ছোটবেলা থেকেই মহাশুন্যে নিয়ে তার আগ্রহের ব্যাপারটি লক্ষ্য করা যায়। এখনও অনলাইনে পাওয়া যায় গেমটি।
এরপর অনলাইন অর্থ আদান প্রদানের সবচেয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য প্রতিষ্ঠান ‘পেপাল’ ছেড়ে শুরু করলেন তার স্বপ্নের ‘টেসলা’। ভবিষ্যতের গাড়ি তৈরির কারখানা। তিনি নিজেই এর ইঞ্জিনিয়ার। চলবে তেল ছাড়া, ব্যাটারি দিয়ে। চার্জ হবে বিদ্যুৎ কিংবা সুর্যের আলোতে।
ইলনের ভাবনা হচ্ছে মানুষের শুধু এই পৃথিবী দিয়ে হবে না। মঙ্গল গ্রহে যেতে হবে। বেসরকারি ভাবে চালু করলেন রকেট বানানো। যার প্রধান প্রকৌশলী তিনি নিজেই। একদম নতুন প্রযুক্তিতে ফ্যালকন রকেট বানালেন। যা একবার নয় বারবার ব্যবহার করা যাবে।আগে একটা রকেট বানানোর পর তা একবারে ধ্বংস হয়ে যেত আর কোটি টাকা নষ্ট হতো। আর এখন সেটা নষ্ট হবে না, পুনরায় ব্যবহার করা যাবে। ফলে মহাশুন্যে যাওয়া আসার খরচ প্রায় পানির দামে নেমে আসবে। কোম্পানির নাম দিলেন ‘স্পেস এক্স’।
মহাকাশকে কক্সবাজার বানিয়ে ফেলতে চায় ইলন। যখন ইচ্ছে আপনি টুক করে মহাশুন্যে গিয়ে আবার ফিরে আসবেন পৃথিবীতে।
বাংলাদেশের একমাত্র স্যাটেলাইট ‘বঙ্গবন্ধু’ এই স্পেসএক্স এর মাধ্যমেই পাঠানো হয়েছে মহাশুন্যে।
‘স্পেস এক্স’ এর আরেকটি সেবা মানুষের ইন্টারনেট ধারণাকে পুরোপুরি বদলিয়ে দেবে। পুরো পৃথিবীটাকে কয়েক হাজার স্যাটালাইট দিয়ে ঘিরে ফেলেছেন ইলন মাস্ক। স্টারলিংক নামের এই ব্যবস্থায় পৃথিবীর প্রতিটি কোনায় কোনায় গিয়ে পৌঁছবে ইন্টারনেট সেবা। গ্রাম থেকে শহর, জংগল থেকে অ্যান্টার্কটিকা মহাদেশে। কোন ধরনের তার ছাড়াই স্বল্প খরচে চলবে ইন্টারনেট সেবা। এ এক যুগান্তকারি পদক্ষেপ। পুরোপুরি চালু হলে পৃথিবীর যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা আমুলে বদলে যাবে। ইলন এর সাথে যুক্ত করতে চান তার কোম্পানীর নতুন মোবাইল ফোন ‘পাই ফোন’। এই খবরে ‘আইফোন’ এর ভবিষ্যত নিয়ে অনেকে সন্দিহান হয়ে পড়েছে।
ইলন বিশ্বাস করেন ব্যাটারীই হচ্ছে প্রযুক্তির ভবিষ্যৎ। সূর্যের আলোই আমাদের মুল জ্বালানী। আমাদেরকে শক্তি ধরে রেখে ব্যবহার করা শিখতে হবে। করলেন ‘সোলার সিটি কোম্পানী’। চিন্তা করলেন পৃথিবীর প্রত্যেকটি বাড়ির ছাদ সোলারের টাইলস দিয়ে ঢাকা থাকবে। বাড়ি থেকে যে সোলার বিদ্যুৎ উৎপন্ন হবে তা যুক্ত থাকবে ন্যাশনাল গ্রিডের সাথে। নিজের ব্যবহারের পর বাড়তি বিদ্যুতের টাকা চলে যাবে তার ক্রেডিড কার্ডে। ভাবুন কত বড় ভাবনা !!
গাড়িতে বসে জ্যামে আটকে থাকা ভীষণ বোরিং একটা ব্যাপার। ভাবলেন জ্যাম ফ্রি শহর কিভাবে করা যায়! বললেন টানেল দিয়ে গাড়ি যাবে। মাটির নিচে টানেল হবে অসংখ্য। রাস্তার জ্যামে ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা বসে থাকানবোরিং জীবনের ইতি ঘটবে।
কোম্পানীর নাম দিলেন ‘বোরিং কোম্পানী’। ভাবুন তো আমাদের ঢাকার জন্য কেউ যদি এমনটা ভাবতো, তাহলে কেমন হতো!
গাড়ি শুধু জ্যাম কাটিয়ে মাটির নিচ দিয়ে গেলেই দ্রুত চলবে না। তার আরো জোরে যাওয়া চাই। নিয়ে আসলেন যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থার এক যুগান্তকারী ধারণা। হাইপারলুপের ধারণা। মাটিতে মানুষ ১ হাজার কিলোমিটার বেগে ছুটে যাবে। ঢাকা থেকে চট্রগ্রাম যাবে ১০ মিনিটে। বিমানের চেয়ে বেশি দ্রুত, প্রায় রকেটের বেগে মাটিতেই চলাচল শুরু করবে মানুষ। ভবিষ্যতের দুর পাল্লার যাতায়ত বিমানে নয়, হবে হাইপারলুপে। এমন পাগলামীর বাস্তবায়ন ইলন ছাড়া আর কারো পক্ষে করা সম্ভর নয়!
টেসলা শুধু মটর গাড়ি বানাবে না, তারা হাত দিয়েছে ব্যাটারির প্রযুক্তি উন্নয়নের জন্য। যে লিথিয়াম-আয়ন ব্যাটারি বর্তমান বাজার দখল করে আছে । তিনি এসে তার পাশা দিলেন উল্টিয়ে। এখন তিনি বানাবেন সিলিকন-আয়ন ব্যাটারি। কেন? সিলিকন বা বালু সহজ লভ্য, দাম কম এবং দীর্ঘস্থায়ী। কারখানার নাম দিলেন ‘টেসলা গিগা ফ্যাক্টরি’।
ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া, নেভাদা, নিউইয়োর্ক, টেক্সাসের পরে ইউরোপের নেদারল্যান্ডস, জার্মানীতে খুললেন গিগার বিশাল ফ্যাক্টরি। সেটা নিয়েও কম ঝামেলা হয়নি। বন কেটে কারখানা বানাতে গিয়ে পরিবেশবাদীদের প্রতিরোধের মুখে পড়তে হয়েছে। তবু এগিয়ে গেছে মাক্স। এরপরই টেসলা কারখানা বানিয়েছে চায়নায় এবং ভারতে।
মানুষের ব্রেন বা মস্তিষ্ক যেভাবে কাজ করে তার সিকি আনাও কোন রোবট বা কম্পিউটার দিয়ে করা সম্ভব নয়। কেমন হয় যদি মানুষের মস্তিষ্ককেই প্রযুক্তির সাথে যুক্ত করা যায়। সে ভাবনাকে বাস্তবে রুপ দিতে চান।তৈরি করলেন কোম্পানী। নাম দিলেন ‘নিউরোলিংক’। মানুষ শুধু ভাববে বা চিন্তা করবে,তার সেই ভাবনা বাস্তবায়নের কাজ করবে রোবট। এর অর্থ হলো মানুষকে কেরানী থেকে সত্যিকারের রাজা বানানোর সকল সরঞ্জাম প্রায় তৈরি করে ফেলেছেন ইলন মাস্ক।
ইলন শুধু স্বপ্ন দেখায় না বাস্তবায়নও করেন। এখানেই তিনি সবার থেকে আলাদা। স্বপ্ন অনেকে দেখে এবং দেখায়, কিন্তু বাস্তব রুপ দিতে পারে খুব অল্প কিছু মানুষ। ইলন তাদের প্রথম সারিতে। এর জন্যই তিনি একসাথে কর্মবীর, বিজ্ঞানী, ব্যবসায়ী, উদ্দ্যোক্তা এবং সর্বপুরি একজন জিনিয়াস মানুষ হিসেবে পরিচিতি পেয়েছেন।
দেউলিয়া হবার যোগাড় :
সফলতার পিছনে অনেক অজানা গল্প থাকে ব্যর্থতার, চেষ্টার আর অলৌকিকতার। ইলনের জীবনেও তেমন কিছু ঘটেছিল। দেউলিয়া হয়ে বাড়ি বিক্রি করে দিতে চেয়েছিলেন মাস্ক। টেসলা ও স্পেস এক্স কোম্পানী দুটি মুখ থুবড়ে পড়েছিল শুরুতে। দেউলিয়া হবার জোগাড় হয়েছিল তার প্রিয় কোম্পানি দুটো। ফ্যালকন রকেট উৎক্ষেপন পরপর তিনবার ব্যর্থ হবার পর কোম্পানীর ব্যর্থতা চরম আকার ধারণ করেছিল।
শুধু তা-ই নয়, ২০০৮ সালে প্রথম স্ত্রীর সঙ্গে বিচ্ছেদ হয়ে যায় মাস্কের। এ সময় প্রচুর অর্থ ব্যয় হয় তার। এমনকি বাসা ভাড়ার জন্য বন্ধুদের কাছ থেকে ধারও নিতে হয়েছিল তাকে।
টেসলার দেউলিয়া হওয়ার আশঙ্কা যখন চরমে, তখন ইলন মাস্কের হাতে ছিল ৪০ মিলিয়ন ডলার। তার সামনে দুইটি পথ খোলা ছিল। হয় পুরো ৪০ মিলিয়ন একটি কোম্পানীতে বিনিয়োগ করা নয়ত দেউলিয়া হওয়া। আবার তিনি যদি দুই কোম্পানিতেই ২০ মিলিয়ন করে বিনিয়োগ করেন, তাহলে সাফল্যের চেয়ে বরং ভরাডুবির সম্ভাবনাই ছিল বেশি। তিনি সেই রিস্কই নিলেন। দুই কোম্পানীতে বিনিয়োগ করলেন ২০ মিলিয়ন করে। জুয়ার গুটি তার পক্ষে গেল। তিনি সফল হলেন। ধীরে ধীরে উন্নতি করতে শুরু করে কোম্পানি দুটো। ইলনের মতে ভাগ্যগুনে বেঁচে গেছে প্রতিষ্ঠান দুটি। সেদিন ব্যর্থ হলে টেসলা আর আজকে পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড় কোম্পানী হতো না, হয়ত টেসলা নামটি হারিয়ে যেত পৃথিবী থেকে।
বিতর্ক ও সমালোচনা যার সঙ্গী:
ফেসবুককে রাবিস বলেছিলেন ইলন মাস্ক। এরপর ফেসবুক থেকে টেসলার একাউন্ট সরিয়ে নিয়েছেন। হঠাৎ তিনি টুইট করলেন ‘ইউজ সিগনাল’। টুইট করার দুই দিনের মাথায় অপরিচিত যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম সিগনালের দর বেড়ে গিয়েছিল ১১০০ গুন। ৫০ মিলিয়নের কোম্পানী দুইদিনে হয়ে গিয়েছিল ৬৬০ মিলিয়নের ডলারের কোম্পানী। তেমনি ‘হোয়াটসআপ বাদ দিন’ বলার সাথে সাথে হোয়াটসআপ ছাড়ার হিড়িক পড়ে গিয়েছিল। শুধু তাই নয় নিজের একটা উল্টাপাল্টা টুইটের কারণে টেসলার শেয়ারের দরপতন হয়েছিলো। তবু এমন টুইট করা থেকে বিরত হননি মাস্ক।
এরকম অদ্ভুম কান্ডকারখানায় ইলন অভ্যস্থ। অন্য ধনী মালিক যখন খুব ভারি এবং বিলাসী জীবনে মগ্ন সেখানে নানান কান্ডকারখানা করে অনলাইন দুনিয়া মাতিয়ে রাখেন। টুইটারের বিভিন্ন ধরনের মিম বা ছবির কৌতুক শেয়ারিং এ তিনি বেশ পটু। ইলন যে কত প্রভাবশালী ব্যক্তি, তার মুখের কথার সাথে শেয়ার বাজারের উঠানামায় সেই আঁচ পাওয়া যায়।
একবার আন্তর্জাতিক ব্যালাস্টিক মিসাইল কিনতে সোজা রাশিয়া চলে গিয়েছিলেন তিনি। যাতে সেটি পুন:নির্মাণ করে রকেট বানাতে পারেন। আসলে মঙ্গলে বসতি স্থাপন করার পুর্বনপ্রস্তুতি শুরু করে দিয়েছিলেন তিনি। কিন্তু কেউ তখন তাকে সিরিয়াস ভাবে নেয়নি।
সে সময় রাশিয়াই একমাত্র দেশে যে কম দামে মিসাইল বানাতে পারতো। তাই খুব আশা নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন রাশিয়ার কাছে। কিন্তু রাশিয়া একটি মিসাইল ৮ মিলিয়ন ডলার দাম চেয়ে বসে। ইলন মনে করেন এত বিশাল মুল্য অহেতুক এবং অতিরিক্ত। তার চেয়ে নিজেই রকেট বানানোই ভালো।
ফিরে এসে নিজেই রকেট বানাতে শুরু করেন ইলন। বর্তমানে সবেচেয়ে কমদামে পুন:ব্যবহার যোগ্য ফ্যালকন রকেট বানাচ্ছে ইলনের কোম্পানী।

জন্ম বেড়ে ওঠা :
জন্ম ১৯৭১ সালে। বাংলাদেশে তখন চলছে মুক্তিযুদ্ধ। এশিয়ায় একটা নুতন দেশ জন্ম নিচ্ছে। আর আফ্রিকায় সে বছর ২৮ জুন একটা ছেলের জন্ম হচ্ছে, যার মা কানাডিয়ান আর বাবা আমেরিকান।
বাবাকে ইলন খুব পছন্দ করতেন না। বলতেন তিনি ভালো মানুষ নন। তার একজন সৎ ভাই ও সৎ বোন আছে।

ইলন তাই ১৭ বছর বয়সে পাড়ি জমান কানাডায়। তার তিন বছর পর আমেরিকায় যান পদার্থবিদ্যা ও অর্থনীতি পড়তে। পেনসিলভিনিয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে তিনি পদার্থ বিজ্ঞানের উপর ডিগ্রি নেন। আর ১৯৯৭ সালে হোয়ারটন স্কুল থেকে অর্থনীতিতে ব্যাচেলর ডিগ্রিও অর্জন করেন। এরপর জ্বালানি পদার্থ বিজ্ঞান নিয়ে পিএইচডি ডিগ্রির জন্য স্ট্যানফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হন। কিন্তু সেখান থাকেন মাত্র দুইদিন। অ্যাকাডেমিক পড়াশুনার পাঠ এখানেই চুকিয়ে ফেলেন ইলন।
ইলন একসাথে সাউথ আফ্রিকা,কানাডা ও আমেরিকার নাগরিক। বর্তমানে তিনি ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার লসএনঞ্জেলসে বসবাস করছেন।
