শিখ ধর্মের প্রবর্তক এবং প্রথম গুরু হচ্ছেন গুরু নানক। তিনি ১৪৬৯ সালে তালওয়ান্ডি গ্রামে জন্ম গ্রহণ করেন। বর্তমান পাকিস্তানের নানকানা সাহিব নামে পরিচিত। গুরু নানক জন্মে ছিলেন এক হিন্দু পরিবারে। কিন্তু তিনি হিন্দু ধর্মের সকল আচার অনুষ্টান মানতেন না। বর্ণ প্রথা আর দেব দেবীর পুজো তিনি কোনভাবেই মানতে পারতেন না ।
নানক পরে তার দুই ছেলে ও স্ত্রীকে নিয়ে সুলতানপুর লোধিতে চলে যান । সুলতান পুরে নানক ১৪ বছর ছিলেন। এখানেই তিনি তার মুল মন্ত্রগুলো লিখে ফেলেন।
মন্ত্রের শুরুই হয় এক অংকার বা একজন মাত্র ঈশ্বর আছেন । পরের তিন দশ তিনি গ্রটা ভারত চষে বেড়ান। দক্ষিনে শ্রীলংকা থেকে উত্তরের তিব্বত কিছুই বাদ যায়নি ।এছাড়া মধ্যপ্রাচ্য ঘুরে বেড়ান তার এই তার এই মতমাদ নিয়ে। যার মুল মন্ত্র হচ্ছে সাম্যবাদ। পৃথিবীর সকল মানুষ সমান কেউ কারো চাইতে বড় নয়।
